Donkey Kong had no plot other than DK kidnapping Pauline, apparently because Mario was a cruel pet owner. DK94 retcons away Donkey Kong's relationship with Mario from Enemies to Frenemies (look at the ending). also whilst removing Donkey Kong Jr (basically DK2) and Donkey Kong 3 from continuity. also at the end of DK94, Pauline gives Mario a Super Mushroom that ups his size from "regular" (Manlet) to his main series' proportions. when he gets hit in the Mushroom Kingdom he shrinks down to "small" (non-super in DK94).

There's also some slight canon-wielding where it turns out that the poison mushrooms that shrunk Mario ingame makes DK gigantic.

Afterwards, presumably DKJR fell out of use, besides Kart and some early 64 spinoffs before being retired. think they avoided using Diddy because they wasn't 100% sure if they were allowed to use him outside of DKC titles. and the Arcade/94 DK presumably became Cranky Kong, kind of believable that DK would be in his prime and is now a shrivelled chimp, compared to the "modern" DK.


DK just swings in-between thinking that personal attacks were against him just because they sold out of Mini-toys. pretty sure the Frenemies thing stuck after 94. oddly enougth at least DK had justification in the DKC series. they either imprisoned other Kongs, taken over an island or stole a banana hoard. (which for some reason was also used in Brawl).


Honestly, Jr versions of characters doesn't really pan out as well, it was mainly seen as a easy way to boost ratings for TV shows (like Scrappy Doo), or just an easy way to expand the roster+make new games (Ms Pac-Man was bought from breakers of Copywrite along with the modified game. Jr presumably was Namco's own creation). if they did bring back Jr, that'd be insane. Bowser Jr gets a free pass since he was introduced during the universal-shift that the Gamecube games bought, when they added characters like E Gadd and Toadsworth.

Yeah, it's mostly accepted that Cranky is the 'original' DK and the current DK is a grown-up Jr.

Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong.

I'm not sure what happened to Donkey Kong 3, though.

Didn't they mention that Mario was a distant uncle of Stanley or something? probably wouldn't mesh well when we have at least word of god confirmation that Bowser Jr is Bowser's biological kid, yet we have kids delivered by storks. to the extent that DK is a newborn, alongside Peach/Mario/Luigi/Wario.

Stanley has probably been shoved to the Game & Watch spinoffs. (at least for the modern versions of classic games)

EDIT: And if you think about it. Mario kidnaps DK in 2/JR, and apparantly wound up at a Zoo/greenhouse in 3. being Frenemies, Mario probably would've been merciful and released him in the wild, than just force him into a zoo.

I like to imagine that Mario just didn't want Donkey Kong in the city. I definitely get the impression that DK1, DK2/Jr, Wrecking Crew, and Mario Bros all take place in what's essentially the same area as New Donk City, and DK3 takes place in what is later Donkey Kong Country.

Stanley has never showed up again, though. I mean, Pauline only has a very short list of appearances as well, but still more than 1.

I believe that that was only Rare's explanation, and that Nintendo themselves never confirmed that.
