It took the better part of an hour, but...

A) My team was at level 18 in power.
B) I didn't properly equip the boys for the contest.

It's my first time fighting him in at least 8 years, so I can't kick myself too hard for not thinking ahead. I gotta say, it's pretty smug on Square's part that the hardest Mario boss is a Final Fantasy tribute character. And I never even noticed that the victory theme is lifted from Final Fantasy until it was pointed out on Did You Know? gaming. It even plays through a character's power up selection if and when they level up.

Seriously though, equipping the healer with an armor which reduces 90% of all enemy offense to 1 HP damage is pretty much equipping "Game Winning Armor." I won't fight as dirty the rest of the game. It was just kind of amusing that the armor is so broken that it can be the difference maker in defeating the optional hardest boss of the game when your team is otherwise woefully underpowered.

I remember as a little kid, I knew there was something off about Culex, but couldn't put my finger on it.

Years later I heard the Final Fantasy battle music somewhere and was like "omg dats da Culex battle musak". Then after investigating, I realized it was originally from FF, and realized it was all a big homage to Final Fantasy.

I wish Nintendo and Square would team up again. (for something besides Fortune Street/Mario Basketball)

Peach could be wearing just the lazy shell and you can win the fight with her just slapping the shit out of culex.

Not at the level I had her at. She was dealing 1 HP of damage and the Dark Star attacks and physical strikes still did some damage to Peach in spite of the armor.

I played SMRPG for the first time right when it came out, I was young maybe 6-7. My older gamer cousin came over and put the lazy shell on peach, and blew my blind. I think I had it equipped on mario, cuz I just equipped all the best shit on mario.

I kinda did the same with Bowser.

One of my few complaints about the game is that his stat growths are weak. Like he starts out as the powerful bruiser, but then everyone "outgrows" him. I don't think that's good story-telling (for that character), nor is it good for the gameplay.

Super Mario RPG is babby's 1st role play game.

So many gamers started off with that before even playing Chrono Trigger or FF.

you just defend with her until the boss and his crystals run out of MP
then you revive everyone with peach's overpowered healing and beat the fuck out of culex

this works on every single boss in the game

I didn't even know what an RPG was until I played that game. Then I played Fantasy Star 2 (I think that was the name of it) on my friend's Genesis and was like, "Oh, this is like Mario RPG."

It took a good 40+ minutes for Culex to run out of FP though.

I don't intend to use that strategy for the remainder of the game though. I just wanted to see if it could be used successfully against Culex. From now on, I'm fighting fair. (And using sheep attack on the enemies that aren't worth my time.)

Eh, it does have a couple of tough boss fights.

Yaridovich
The Axem Rangers
Culex
Smithy

As with virtually any RPG, you can level grind until you just Dragon Ball Z your opponents or apply the right combination of characters, equipment, and weapons to exploit your opponent's Achilles heel.

And you can always impose challenge by under equipping your characters. It more or less lets you pick your difficulty.

Last time I fought him and Smithy, I remember Mario and Geno basically being glass cannons, but somehow I had Toadstool taking 0 damage from pretty much everything. The game is still challenging at times (the cake fight, Exor without Geno Whirl, and the dojo, in particular for me), but with planning of stats, it really isn't as bad as I remember it being when I was 5 or 6 years old.

Is lazy shell the one you get for doing Mario's jump on an enemy 99 consecutive times? I don't remember.

You get it from going to rose town and giving the gardener the seed and fertilizer. This can't be done until after you beat nimbus land.

One of my favorite summers was the one I spent beating this game. Don't judge, but I actually remember struggling at some points with this. And my party make up was apparently trash. Oh well.

That's the only clue that's of any help. You're more likely to figure out on your own than by any of the clues.

I found out because my cousin told it to me. And he found out because someone my uncle knew had recently received pearls as a gift. It just clicked.
