Not a Tesla fan in general, but if I did own one, I can't imagine having it in auto pilot the whole time. Kind of ruins the fun that Tesla fans go ga ga for in 1/4 miles and ludicrous mode.

The article doesn't say what the dude was doing but just because it's called "autopilot" doesn't mean you can just fuck around. It isn't a self-driving car. It's 2017 not 2030.

Saw this on Reuters this morning. Sounds like the type of guy who dies in a house fire because he disconnects the fire alarms when they start beeping, instead of changing the batteries.

So the car kept warning him to have his hands on the wheel and he never did, well only for 25 seconds?

He was repeatedly warned by the vehicle that his hands were necessary, the regulators said.

maybe in situations like this the car should just pull over to the side of the road and refuse to play ball until the guy stops being a dumbass

It would be dangerous for the car to pull over by itself wouldn't it?

>_>

I stuffed one in some cabinets in the garage years ago because it wouldn't shut up even after being completely disconnected.

Tesla's autopilot is not fully self-driving like Google's cars.

It's just cruise control that stabilizes steering where as normally you will veer off to the side eventually in a normal car. You have to manually turn on the blinkers to change lanes.

possibly, but im pretty sure the car does something similar if it detects the driver is no longer in the driver's seat.

it does a lot more than that. it senses lanes on the road and can take the car around curves/corners. it can detect stop signs and stop lights and react appropriately, among other things. but yeah, it's definitely not comparable to what's in the self-driving Google cars or anything.

That's what I'm getting at. Someone in the comments even said that they should consider calling it "Auto-Assist" instead of "Autopilot".

If I recall there was a big lawsuit when cruise control first became a thing because some moron went into the back of her RV to make an sandwich while the bus was in cruise control so they had to change the description of what cruise control was. Could happen to Tesla if there's more morons like this driving them.
