The next big update has been announced for Pokémon GO. This update alters Gym Battles and adds new Raid Battle features.

First Gyms will now give items, just like PokéStops and now have six different slots for each Gym. Each Pokémon has to be a unique species. Each Pokémon has motivation and as it wins or loses, its CP will temporarily decrease. If all motivation is lost, it returns to the trainer.

There are now also GO Badges which get levelled up by battling, spinning the Gym disc and giving berries to Pokémon in the gym.

Raid Battles have also been announced. These cause a Gym to lose all its Pokémon and all nearby players can challenge it. If successful, then you have a chance to capture a strong Pokémon. This is done through special Premier Balls given if the Raid is successful. You can only use Premier Balls for these Pokémon so if you run out, you cannot capture. Raid Battles require use of a Raid Pass to participate. You can get one of these a day by visiting a gym, but you can only hold one at a time.

You can also purchase a Premium Raid Pass from the game's shop for Coins. Raid Battles have a 5 minute times. You can also organise private raids

New items have also been confirmed and are only obtained by beating a Raid Battle Boss: A Rare Candy is a mysterious candy that, when used on a Pokémon, turns into that Pokémon's Candy. Golden Razz Berries will greatly increase your chances of catching a Pokémon you encounter in the wild and can also be given to a Pokémon assigned to a Gym to fully recover its motivation meter.

Technical Machines are items you can use to permanently teach a Pokémon a new Fast Attack or Charged Attack.

No date has been given for the update, by Gyms will go offline later today

Have they fixed any of the basic shit that made this game unplayable after a while, other than these cool new add ons? I remember getting a point where you'd exhaust all your pokeballs just trying to catch a fucking weedl, and that's all you'd ever find anyway.

supposedly that was an "error in their algorithm" and has since been fixed.

I stopped playing after a month, then redownloaded it and gave it one more shot this spring after they released the Gen 2 Pokemon. I fiddled with it for another couple weeks, then ran into the same fucking problem of only seeing the same 10 Pokemon over and over.

That and it constantly needed tiny updates I didn't download, to be played. I was on a trip to Cleveland, updated a day or two before leaving, then while in Cleveland figured I'd open up and see if any interesting Pokemon showed up. Lo and behold, needed another update, wouldn't let me play.

Fuck that game. It infuriates me that they literally rake in millions of dollars every day for what's effectively a broken, empty app that features virtually no real gameplay.

This is a great point. It's a great example of how western developers for the most part are absolutely shitty at creating video games.

Yeah. Japanese devs seem to put more of their heart and soul into games. But then again, they probably have far more intensive work schedules due to the toxic work culture in Japan.

A double-edged sword, I suppose.
