You likely have four slots on your motherboard, right? I've got four and currently I just use two for 8GB total.
It's so rare for me to need to page file at that point, and with a SSD, it's quick anyway. Could you get away with just using fewer ports?

I'm asking because if you've had your computer for a while, there's a chance they don't even make motherboards with your chipset anymore, so getting a new motherboard would mean you'd also need a new processor. That's expensive so you'd want to avoid it if possible.

One final note: Windows ties itself to your motherboard, so if you change motherboards, it will invalidate your copy of Windows. You have to unregister while using your old motherboard first, then you can use that same keycode to reregister with the new one.

i'm using an msi z170a, so it's still being made.

as it is, i just swapped the sticks to the other slots and it's working fine, so it's a bad port.

That has 4 slots I'm assuming. Yeah it sucks but if you're not utilizing all 4 slots it's not the end of the world
