OFFICER WHO SHOT PHILANDO CASTILE FOUND NOT GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS
http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/16/us/philando-castile-trial-verdict/index.html

There doesn’t seem to be any circumstance where a police officer can be convicted for wrongful homicide. Even when the shooting is caused by the officer’s own lapses in communication and judgment. Even when the officer’s deviations from departmental policy are instrumental in creating the situation.

There’s a double-standard at work against the public when a police officer has the apparent license to discharge his or her weapon against a non-dangerous civilian based on an impression, later shown to be in error, that the officer’s life is in danger. But if the situation were reversed — For example, if a civilian were to hear burglars enter his home in the middle of the night, and in fear for his life, open fire on the intruders who barged in on him, only to discover later that they were police officers on an unannounced no-knock raid — then the gavel would come down with the full force of the law.

We *need* police to keep us safe. But our justice system defers far too much to the questionable, at-times-lethal instincts of police officers claiming to have acted out of fear, whereas the in-the-moment fears and mindsets of civilians fall by the wayside. And while these disparities are felt by all of us, it’s no great revelation that they’re felt most acutely by African Americans and other minority communities.

Black lives absolutely, 110% matter.

Absolutely tragic. My heart goes out to the family, and especially the widow, of Philando Castile. She did one hell of a job taking that cell phone video.

It's tragic that absolutely nothing has changed since the 1930s.
