Aside from the shooter, that is.

A long-running talking point for the right is that 'if everyone were armed, mass shootings wouldn't hurt people.'

Today we saw it put to practice. The absolute best protective team available to any Americans was in operation on the field. Their rapid response is why we didn't have a dozen or more dead congressmen.

Had the sites of many of the previous mass shootings had such protection, the casualties would've been drastically reduced. But just random people with guns probably wouldn't be enough--they'd need to be trained expert marskmen, as were the security team in action today.

The question in my mind, then, is "Can we afford it?"

I will say that I would be happy to pay more taxes if it meant improved security on site in venues with very large crowds. I'd love to not have to and achieve the same result, but I don't know if there is a path to that that we as a country can take.
