Well I've found one of the community managers twitters and he's been answering some questions. There's going to be further information revealed soon which is great. But for now if you're interested https://twitter.com/SocksyBear seems legit. But it's not gospel yet.

Things to get hype about are that it's apparently the next mainline Monster Hunter and not a spin off, it's targeted towards western audiences, which may or may not be a good thing, but the trailer impressed.

Palicoes are in it, offline mode is available and party forming is still doable albeit he hasn't revealed any information about any multiplayer towns or whatever yet. Charge Blades apparently pretty hype.

Personally I'm interested to see how this drop in multiplayer mode will work with previously established mechanics like carting and so forth and if it will have features enabled without the use of private lobbies to prevent low tiered hunters dropping into big game hunts or trolls popping in just to sink them.

Anyway I know there's a few fans here on the board so figured I'd throw this up and if anyone has better info please let me know.

Give me a run down on what monster hunter is and what it does well. Only time I ever seen one was one I almost bought on 2ds for my girls kid but decided against it.

The basic premise is you choose a class of weapon (which can be swapped at any time for one of the others but the gear system is based on drops, so you kinda need to stick to one or two types to not have to grind) and then you accept missions given by the monster hunting guild/village elder/whoever to go and hunt various monsters. Of which there are many types, from like big ass mosquitos and spiders, to dragons the size of a village.

You learn their habits (areas they spawn and patrol) and their attack patterns and hunt them down using weapons and various other items you can bring with you, you can in most cases either trap them and bring them in alive or kill them. Some tasks will have you do one of those specifically or some variation.

You craft your own armor and weapons from the parts of the monsters you hunt to get better gear to hunt bigger game, so progression is both equipment and skill based, rather than being able to skip difficulty by grinding.

There's various other things too like traps and explosives and what not, but that's the basics... and it's a ton of fun doing the larger hunts with friends.

The difficulty gets very steep towards end game too, with it imo being harder than DKS. You generally rank up by going through tiers of quests in each category before you can reach next so Low, High and G Rank, G Rank being the hardest.

There's boat loads of different monsters and most have one or two subspecies you can fight in the higher ranks also to keep things interesting... and they generally take a couple hundred hours to finish.

Combats much tighter than it used to be and I can't speak for this new one for obvious reasons, but it's got a quirky style to it that rewards timing and skill, with weapons varying from Gatling gun like crossbows called Heavy Bowguns to Great Swords, down to daggers (Dual blades) and horns. So there's something for everyone to choose from.

I absolutely adore it but I'll be the first to admit the combat takes getting used to and it just won't work for people that have no patience.

Actually I probably did a bad job answering your question there sorry.

What it does well:

Combat, sense of scale, sense of progression, has a lot of depth with weapons needing to be sharpened mid battle sometimes and the meat you can gather from some monsters being cooked on the field also. Enemy variety, set pieces and challenge are also great.

What it does badly:

Explaining anything to newcomers, explaining the gear system at all and what the skills do, the item crafting for things like healing items and ammo can be a pain to grind if you need specific un-purchasable parts, and is basically left to you to discover the recipes yourself. I see the latter as rewarding but I can see why it would piss people off also.

It's also piss poor at explaining just how important weapon sharpness and the higher gradients of it. In general the better your gear the more "usable" sharpness it will have. But it's tiered, so while purple sharpness is the best and will cut through anything, dealing the most damage, a weapon with really high base damage might only have yellow sharpness, which will barely cut/impact anything.

I imagine if they're targeting westerners with this one, some of that will be rectified but it might also water down the better bits with it. Which is a bit of a concern.

Shrugs hope that one was better.

I'm hoping so, but I don't see how they do without reducing difficulty by quite a large margin, but I don't see how they allow it without giving way to freeloaders and trolls.

Oooo nice the game has a day and night cycle too. Hopefully that combines with nocturnal and diurnal creatures. According to a few sources that've gone hands on with the game, the general monster ai has improved considerably too. Looking good so far.

Really upset with World for a lot of reasons (not all of them World's fault) but there's a high chance I'm going to be leaving MH. Really sucks cuz I've been super into it the last 4-5 years :(

Can I ask what reasons? I've seen or heard nothing that would make me not want to play this title. All those rumors about "simplified for westerners" and whatever else that were going around on 4chan turned out to be totally overblown.

1. Not with Nintendo and I don't own a PS4. I can play on PC but...
2. No longer Mobile then. I can't bring the game to my buddies house and play with my buds. Option will not exist with World. Will also no longer be able to just play in bed and chill playing monster hunter. I'll have to sit at my PC instead which is less desireable.
3. Most likely Prowlers not playable. One of the new features of Generations is being able to play as Prowler which I immensely loved and would be very upset if now I can't play as them.
4. This one isn't that much of an issue but I really hate the design of the main monster they have been showcasing. Generic Trex Monster with a weird ass nose.

I think the Anjanth looks pretty great, but until I've seen more I can't really go yay cool or boo boring. I get the mobile thing, but the comfort of having it on a big screen and being able to chill while I play rather than always having to look at a tiny screen makes a huge difference to me.

...As for the Prowler thing, I've got no idea it's been confirmed there's a lot of returning stuff and new stuff, and the new mobility the grappling hook provides means everyone not using Insect Glaive isn't shit out of luck anymore so I'm good with it.

Well the Anjanth thing is just an opinion. Really not a fan of that design.

As for the mobile / big screen argument...

The Switch can do both! It's an amazing system! It should have 100% been for the Switch as well! That way both parties would be pleased! I've had MUCH more fun on Monster Hunter when I've been able to play it with my friends at their houses or just chilling, comfortable, in my bed.

As for Prowler, I'm 99% sure they won't be playable and as someone who was completely in love with them, I will NOT go back to playing as a hunter out of spite as they literally just added them in Generations. I'd be incredibly pissed off if they just ignored that for World.

If it sounds like I'm bitter about this, it's because I am. I've spent hundreds of hours playing the last few Monster Hunters and to have all of these changes that completely clash with my interests and why I loved the games so much is really just a huge punch to the face.

Yeah that's why I was trying to be empathetic to what you said rather than dismissing it. I think a lot of Ninty fans are pissed about this, but this is like reverse world for me currently where I had to endure being stuck on handheld to enjoy the series for so long and was never able to get a decent mainline on console or PC for fucking years.

Sorry you feel that way though I wish everyone could have their MH fix.
