I own 1-3 of the original 4 but I only ever finished the first one. Not even sure where they are now

Matsuyama: Actually, that’s not the only thing. The entire 3 volumes of G.U. lead to one conclusion. But on whether a true salvation would be indeed there or not, there are also parts that may not seem so.

It ended with a feel like, “Someday, I will see a dream of such a day”, but this game will have the answer to the question of “When will that someday be?”. I think everyone will get to meet the “how do you do” Haseo that they didn’t know of before.

Just curious, I've only ever seen .Hack Sign. Do the games and other animes have anything to do with that? Or is it its own self contained story? If it is a self contained story, is it because it's happening in a different time, or different universe, or what?

I think IMOQ happen near the end of sign and have some references in the first two games as well as a major character in the games also being from Sign, but other than that, they follow their own story as far as I know.

GU is a sequelish series to IMOQ and doesn't have much to do with Sign other than Haseo being someone from that series which is never mentioned at all in the games so you'd either have to watch Sign and put the pieces together on who he is or just look it up since it doesn't matter to the series at all.

The quadrilogy takes place about a year after sign starts

Ideally, you'll watch roots between GU 1 and GU 2

And yes, I can verify all the dates are accurate for the precursory events like Pluto's kiss which was still being talked about in the first games.

I'd say there's a good chance. With the popularity of SAO, No Game No Life,and Log Horizon it's a good time for them to capitalize on being the first in the genre.

So basically, the quality of that plot point/genre died completely and horribly after .hack lol

I'm interested, but the number of games in this series is intimidating. Plus I don't like playing games out of order since this appears to be a later series of .hack rather than the first games. >_>
Also I don't have a ps2 so I can't play the games other than remasters.

Actually the games are short enough that they basically are one longer RPG. Like, think persona long. For all the games.

And link takes place after gu, and knowing the story for the games quad before GU doesn't add a ton.

You'll do fine without playing the first four. You'll be lost on some references, and a couple characters, albeit different, show up in G.U., but nothing that'll prevent you from enjoying them.
