Apparently you're not supposed to use attacks constantly, and you're supposed to use stuff like Growl/Tail Whip and other things?

Competitive is the only true way to play unless you have the mind of a child or you unironically enjoy "muh nuzlockes xDDDD!"

Shit like Dragon/Sword Dance yes, but not the useless debuffs like Growl. ...Probably not worth using during the story, though. >_>

Nuzlockes don't matter. Competitive is when you play online against real people. Idk how to explain it so look up guides on Smogon.

I've got Moon, my first Pokemon game since the original Gen 1.

So far all I've done is pet my Pokemon and give them tummy rubs. :3

I very rarely if ever use anything other than attack moves.

there's literally no reason to use non-damaging moves in during the story lol. Most trainers in the recent gens only have 1 pokemon anyways.

Status moves have uses here in there while playing through the game itself. But in competitive play they can be very important.

I only used growl/tail whip during the first battle with the rival since you're usually at equal levels and it depends if you rng a weak attacking one or your rival rngs a defensive stud.

Support moves are a must if you are severely underleveled, like in some ROMhacks. Else there's no need to have them.

Nah you've been playing it right for ingame (need status moves for the random SOS wild battles though). You need buffs for competitive battling and the ingame battle tower

this. IDK what's worse, gen 1's TERRIBLE AI, or gen 6/7's thing with having everyone not related to the story (or even related to the story sometimes) only have 1 or 2 pokemon

Nah, there's no right or wrong way to do single-player.
Competitively, only moves that buff two or more stats(Dragon Dance, Quiver Dance, Calm Mind, etc.) or buff an attack stat two stages(Swords Dance, Nasty Plot) are used(Agility is used rarely). Defensive buffs are kind of iffy because critical hits ignore them, and debuffs are (generally) weak because a human opponent isn't going to let the pokemon you just Screeched stay in and eat physical attacks.

As far as buffing in-game, Swords Dance and Nasty Plot each buff their respective offensive stat two stages, making subsequent attacks 100% more powerful(i.e. you'll do about as much damage in one attack as you would in two before the boosts.) The AI switches once in a blue moon(if it's the third Tuesday in a month), but mostly it'll just leave its pokemon in to die against something that has super-effective attacks.
