I dunno why that little bit of B8 history intrigued me so much. I definitely admired what you were trying to do - maybe that's it lol. I can't remember how much the building was on sale for, like 20k? Do you know how much they paid for it in the first place?

the building would have been sold to me for 6k I believe. I had put 2-3k down and I was looking for any other board 8ers to donate or put in money for helping.

Back then I remember being surprised about how little each board 8er had in their bank account. I think I'd probably have a lot more success if I tried it today.

The original owner bought it for 30k, he massively overpaid, at the time the price of a house in cairo was legit around 60 bucks. In fact there's a story about one of his friends buying a house in the town for that price.

Looking at cairo now, housing prices are way up, a livable 4 bedroom house costs you about 30k

I wonder if there's a subset of investors out there who buy these ghost-town properties and sit on them. I'm sure they're out there - whether they actually make money is the better question.

I doubt it! Cairo housing prices might be going up a little, but cairo is most assuredly dying. The only grocery store in town shut down, I think there's only one or two businesses left; a bar and a thrift shop. It's about an hour drive if you want to do laundry in a laundromat or buy groceries. If you were to buy property out there, you would need to spend considerable effort into keeping it livable, keeping it from flooding, and put time and money into the community to keep it from death (which there are some people who do, but it's more of a charity thing than an investing thing)

It'd be far too risky imo. If you want to buy property out there, its because you have a bit of extra money and you like the novelty of owning a second home in the middle of nowhere (which could be me one day)
