I've seen some footage and I'm sold. Generic is okay.

This. Each area has a level cap. You can grind until you hit that cap, but then your EXP gains from battles will drop by like 95%. BUT each area's boss is fairly easy even at that cap, so it's not bad at all. The only place I'd say to grind is in the mountain area near the beginning of the game. The boss there can and will mess you up if you're not leveled properly for it.

FF XIII had a level cap too but you could grind when you reached the last level of the crystarium, can you do that here?

How linear vs open is it? Can you go around and so side quests? How free is it before the final boss? Are there super bosses?

From what I remember, initially it is pretty linear but you do get access to the world map before the final boss. There's also a few secret areas and I remember one specific crazy boss, though there may be more.

It's one of those JRPGs that is pretty linear until you get to like the last section of the game

I could never get into it myself.

I liked some of the depressing story but the game quickly went no where and was very dull.

I am aware being overly long and dull is the bread and butter of JRPGs but usually they compensate by drawing you into a world and making you care. Lost Odyssey never did that for me,

Also this. That first boss kicked my ass because I was underleveled and unprepared.

The music is top-tier, though. I haven't played LO in years and I can still remember the music.

It seems very traditional. Maybe too much so. A game a little behind in terms of gameplay even though it's a little older itself.

Attack the arms in order: left, right, left, right, etc. IIRC, one is resistant to damage each turn but the other is vulnerable, and it switches each turn.

Do it, fantastic game. If not best rpg on xbox, FF games are terrible cmpared to LO

SPend SOO many hours on that game, loved it. Also if you are close to finishing you should really check out all the sidequests which are awesome and give you some sweet items.

quit on Disc 4? That last dungeon is terrible if you're going to quit for months in between cause its so annoyingly complicated. I finished the game like 4/5 years after starting it:)

Main story is pretty garbage but the short stories are amazingly well written and the background of the characters is more interesting than anything they do in story. Still much worse games out there.

It was okay. Really long load times and the cast was as bland as the story but it had those cool side stories in there that kind of made up for it. The battle system and methods for learning abilities were fairly interesting as well... though the game was way too easy.
