yeah that's the part i am not understanding

this is a discussion about price hikes on generic drugs.

couldn't another firm step in and produce it at a lower price?

this is a question of profit opportunity

Company A: "I'll sell this drug for $100 each. It costs me $5 to make."

Company B: "I'll sell this drug for $20 each. It costs me $5 to make too, but I'll market it to the same people and steal all of company A's customers."

I do not understand what prevents company B from doing that here.

Big Pharma is nothing but greed. There is no altruistic company that actually cares about the people.

Something is missing or hindering the opportunity, then. Because if there are tons of people out there who cannot afford a drug they need, stepping in and manufacturing the product and selling it at a lower cost will make you a lot of money...and that right there is an incentive for 'greedy' people....

Big Pharma will just have their people in government throw every roadblock they can in the way to stop it.

These people drove up prices by destroying stock over a trade dispute to make 40 times more money. And then wanted to "celebrate" that fact. How would you live with yourself?

Company A: "Don't undercut us, we have the power to destroy you, instead, work with us to raise prices, and we'll both profit by ensuring there is no cheaper alternative."

Company B: "OK!"

Unless of course it costs a lot more than that to make, and or the startup is too expensive.

Because what really happens is:

Company A: "Don't undercut us, we have the power to destroy you, instead, work with us to raise prices, and we'll both profit by ensuring there is no cheaper alternative."

Company B: "OK!"

Assuming that's what happens, all that does is open the door for Company C to step in and lower prices, and so forth. Eventually there is no way that many companies can collaborate.

The major companies work together and use their government connections and lobbyists to make sure other companies can't step in.
