so many lives for tens of hours at a time?

Airplanes aren't like cars. Cars can have so many safety measures in it that in some situations, even in a bad car crash, you could still come out unharmed, plus when you are driving, you are on ground level, you don't have to worry about falling from hundreds of kilometers from the sky. Same can not be said when you are piloting an airplane. You are most likely going to die if you crash an airplane unless you have dependable quick thinking and reflex to jump out and deploy your parachute in time.

You start learning to pilot an airplane in those small 2 seat planes, and it's scary man. What if your hands slipped when dropped your attention? Do they even have auto pilot system in those small planes? I was told to give pilot school a try, but when I imagine myself in the pilot seat, I just panic so much. I have been on airplanes plenty of time in my life as a passenger, but it's a complete different story as a pilot.

I'd say it's less on the pilot (and no offence to them, I imagine the job is incredibly stressful), but it's the air traffic controllers who have it worse. After going through the program, and then getting axed at the last minute, dude, you don't know stress until that shit is on top of you...

Airline pilots used to be the rock stars of the sky, the pay was good, and they stayed at nice hotels when away from home. Now they are nothing more then glorified bus drivers.

The training fees still cost 100,000 dollars though.

And they often sleep in tiny trailers just off the runway to save money.
