Can't really compare them since they're not the same genre.

But for a longer answer, Nier Automata's story isn't as deep and convoluted as MGS series since that has like... 7 games worth of plot over it?, but the writing is decent enough to keep you interested in it.

Sadly, people beat one of the playthroughs and call it a day disregarding the story.

yea, make sure to get through to ending E.

I like how the themes it covers (won't post them since they'll spoil the story) are also reflected in the gameplay/playthroughs.

anyway, I thought that the story was really good.

There's this too, can't post much about the plot without spoiling the whole thing...

One of the most well-written and creative games ever made, honestly. It is the surprise hit of 2017.

Weird. The only RPGs with crappy stories are WRPGs.

The story pays great attention to detail and the game develops its themes really well. The sidequests and general dialogue is often a metaphor for the stories bigger ideas. Even the gameplay is often closely linked with these themes.

It's the type of story where you look back on things in a different light once you've reached the end.

Erm, as someone who has played both series and read novels/books of them multiple times I can assure you that the Drakengard/Nier universe is MUCH more convoluted than the MGS universe.

I mean sure if you consider that Nier spawned from a joke ending on one of the drakengard games, sure it's as convoluted.

But if you consider it from the standalone point of Nier and Automata, it's pretty fucking straightforward but explaining it would be spoilers.

This sums it up better though.

Not just considering that.

Drakengard 3 had 3/4 multiple branches, branching into 1.3, a series of Novels by Ones brother, and then Nier itself.

Not to mention 1.3 itself having 5 branches with one of them leading onto the land of dragons.

Even the Brother Onenarration itself led onto Drakengard 1, as it fit in a few pieces of the puzzle and story that was missed out in Drakengard 3.

Then you have the totally seperate timeline of Drakengard 2, which isn't even a direct sequel of 1 and that itself has its own multiple endings.

Finally when you get to Nier, it just gets even more insane, leading onto the Gestalt/replicant project, with that leading onto the Space wars and even more Novellas.

This is not even taking to account Nier Automata and what happens in the 14th machine war and previous select ones with A2 and her Unit.

Edit: I also missed out other flowcharts of the specific games such as:

https://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/drakengard/images/8/8b/DOD_1.3_Flowchart.png/revision/latest?cb=20150308024811

This itself was just in DOD 1.3.

And a cute image of the DOD 3 Branches.
