You can learn all the STEM skills you want but if you can't communicate your thoughts properly to other human beings or work with others what use are you to anyone?

This.

You've be surprised how much SMART objectives come in handy. Especially when you are a project lead and you have to keep your coworkers in check so the project actually gets done.

False, you go speak at conferences filled with STEM workers that use those conferences as mini paid vacations.

SMART objectives is a proper way to state a goal you want to achieve.

An example of a non SMART goal is to tell my boss during my performance review that one of my goals for the year is to learn Windows server. This goal is broad and hard to determine if you completed it or not.

An example of a SMART goal would to state that I plan to earn Window Server 2016 professional certification by December 31st. This goal is specific, it's measurable(did you earn the cert? Yes or no), it's a defined achievable thing, it's realistic that you can study and pass the exam between now and December 31st, and there's a time date for when it needs to be complete by.

Seems useful, but that example doesn't relate to me. Any other applications?

I mean any team project you do in IT, engineering, DevOps, what have you will require SMART goals to complete the project. It's a required part of project planning.
