Was driving to work and the speed limit on the road was 45 and then it turns into 25 as soon as you get into town. Driving along and I'm coming up to the car ahead of me fairly quickly, but I'm going, at most, 45-50. Slow down as I approach but to slow down enough and still not be catching up to him, I have to go <40. The guy then starts breaking hella early for the speed change and apparently he didn't like that I was behind him.

He then slows to an almost stop and then starts goin again. When I'm like "uh what the fuck dude" with my hands, he starts flipping me off and acting like I'm the bad guy.

Sorry that you don't know the fucking speed limit and how to properly drive dude. Don't take that shit out on me, especially when my car is definitely 10+ years younger than his.

People that fucking do that or come to an almost complete stop while merging onto an expressway are the biggest pain in the asses ever, sometimes moreso than the actual morons that aren't careful or follow the rules either.

Embrace the rage, my dear boy. Let the cortisol levels shave hour after hour off your general life expectancy.

I regularly slow down for tailgaters. Over the last few months I have been dabbling in operant conditioning with a furry-knuckled simpleton who tends to drive to work at the same time as Yours Truly. He has almost, but not quite grasped the concept that if he creeps up to my back bumper, I will cease adhering to the speed limit and begin slowing down.

So brake checking is not ok but if you're not tailgating it's not a problem.

Thing is, you can't stop assholes from tailgsting. Blaming them isn't going to solve the problem. All you can do is drive responsibly yourself.

If you're close enough that a brake check causes you problems, you fucked up.

Pretty much that.

But I think TC was alright in this situation depending on how far from that lower speed limit he was. I can't stand people who drive 10 mph under the limit because their turn is coming up in 5 miles. That shit bothers me.

I used to do all that shit until I brake checked the wrong cholo in Chicago who sped up through oncoming traffic to get in front of me, slammed on the brakes trapping my car behind his, and then tapped on my window with a bat while screaming a bunch of incoherent shit.

Now I just drive my car from point a to point b and shut the fuck up because people are fucking nuts

I always try to keep a car lengths space between me and the car in front of me. If the person in front of me is going too slow, I pass them. Getting mad on the road is counter productive. Also, invest in a dash cam. It can save your ass in cases like this, also you might get a discount on your insurance as well.

I wasn't even on his ass.

I was riding my brake behind him with about 1/3 of a car length. He started slowing down well before a corner and after the corner is when it turns to 25.

6s3Fz2g

Red line is where he was definitely slowing down, green line is where it turns to 25. Supposed to be 45 west of the green. The brake checking happened before the corner. And I was riding my own brakes (it's downhill) and still not losing ground on him before that. I slowed down to like 40, which is what I'm guessing he was going.

I believe it's supposed to be a car length for every 10 mph. I could be wrong. I took my test almost 20 years ago.

I dunno why people bother with this meteic in the first place, tbh.

First of all, the hell is a car length? Smart cars are like ten feet long and limos are like 40. Are we talking a Fiat or a Buick?

Second of all, who can estimate these things with any kind of accuracy? Suppose one car length is 20 feet. That's 100 feet at 50MPH. Go ask 100 people how far it is to the car ahead of you and you'll get everywhere from 30 feet to 200.

Thirdly, literally doing math while driving splits your concentration.

Fourthy, is it 1 car length per 10mph, or 2 car lengths per 15mph, or... uh...

Fifthly, the three seconds rule is the exact same thing, but simpler, easier to measure and easier to remember. Suppose you need to follow by x distance per y speed. Divide x by y and wht do you have left? You got it, a following time.

I almost hit someone the other day for a similar reason and not knowing how to turn.

I was following someone on the winding road near my house and we came up to a spot where most people hit their brakes (dude was braking everywhere anyway) so we both hit our brakes and I just assumed he would keep going. Out of nowhere he stops in the middle of the road, then turns his turn signal on, then turns. I wouldn't have been so close to him if he could drive and use his turn signal at the same time.

So does a car in another lane turning on their blinker. I'm saying it barely does anything to me since mental math is a forte of mine.

Yeah idk if he was just having a shitty morning or what. Like I only tailgate if I'm super late for something and in s hurry and I was riding my brake behind him.

If I wasn't, I probably would of tapped his bumper. Would of definitely called the cops no matter what if that happened. Even if there wasn't damage I'd want it put on his record that he's a dirty ass brake checker.

3 seconds of travel time, +1 if you're tired, +1 if it's raining, +1 if it's dark

timing is nice because it's quick to do: pick an object they pass, count to 3 and if it reaches you before 3, give more space

lol I wasn't tailgating. If I was, his tactic would of worked. I was riding my breaks and traveling under the speed limit directly because of him. Unless he has a mechincal failure or something like that which causes him to not be able to travel the speed and he has his hazards on, the guy needs to learn how to fucking drive.

Break checking in general is a sketchy practice. But if you do it, the point doesn't rely on the speed limit, it relies on how closely a car is following behind you.

Oh look, a self-righteous jerk who endangers others in their hypocritical soap boxing.

Like I get it, people speed and that's inconsiderate. If you're driving the flow of traffic, whatever, but if you slow down below that to "show this guy what's what", you're no better than him.

Slower than traffic is equally dangerous to faster than traffic. If you were truly as mature as you're wishing to come off, just get out of the way next time.

If someone behind me is driving much faster, I always move. 99 out of a hundred times, it's probably some impatient jerk. But in the one event it's some emergency and someone is driving to the hospital, or what have you, if you literally block them from this, you're a terrible person.
