Totally forgot it was "originally" supposed to come out this year but it's a kickstarter game and its the year of our lord 2017. Absolutely no one is surprised by a massive delay.

Well, it came out on the Dreamcast, and while it is very well critically acclaimed, they would have needed to sell 2 copies of the game to everyone that owned a Dreamcast to break even. It is almost single handedly the reason why SEGA stopped making consoles.

Shenmue 2 (the best game ever made) came out right at the end of the Dreamcast's life, and wasn't released in North America until a port on the original Xbox, but by that time, a lot of people had moved on.

They have never released any other versions which are accessible to a normal gamer now (no HD version), so the few that have played it still have to play it on the Dreamcast (which dies quite easily). And because of this there are hardly any new fans.

The game itself made certain things revolutionary (QTEs) but have been copied and done to death since then, so even if you went back and played it now for the first time, you probably wouldn't attain the same love that you would have if you played it on release.

Sad story, because both games are absolutely fantastic.

It was even sadder that it was presented at a PS4 conference as if Sony was going to have a hand in reviving it, only to reveal that they only just announced the Kickstarter.

Not sure how kickstarter status is bad. Lots of good games have done it (and many bad ones, I admit)

Until they start porting Shenmue 1 and 2 to Steam, I have no reason to start playing Shenmue 3, and I don't think anyone else does either.

This will be a future concern. If they expect any newcomers to buy Shenmue 3, they need to release 1 & 2 in some fashion on a current gen system. It would also fuel some additional cash revenue for 3. Unfortunately, working on a port takes time away from 3 which I doubt they want to do.

Objection! The PS2 and Xbox have much higher rates of laser failures. If we factored out people straining the DC laser with CD-Rs it would probably have even lower failure rates than the GameCube.

Overruled. I am on my 4th Dreamcast... though you do have a point about the original Xbox laser dying, had 2 of those as well.

You're in the minority. I've done game console repair as a hobby for years and the numbers don't lie. I could go into further detail but suffice it to say the most common drives for the original Xbox had a design flaw, also the clock capacitor which will eventually destroy any system it hasn't been removed from, and the PS2 has two major points of failure with the most common laser module and the magnetic spindle wearing down (this is the source of the common grinding noise). The most common point of failure on Dreamcasts is actually the AV port, but still pretty rare.

I played the first one and loved the hell out of it but by the time the second one came around I had already moved on. This seems like a common experience.

What Kickstarter games are good?

Lots. Let me get a list real quick.

- Shovel Knight
- FTL
- Banner Saga series
- Hyper Light Drifter
- Divinity: Original Sin
- Darkest Dungeon
- SuperHot
- Broken Age (which started this whole gaming Kickstarter thing in the first place)
- Shantae

I'm sure there's others I'm missing. I excluded games I thought was good but have divided opinions one way or another (Undertale, Yooka-Laylee).
I'm of the opinion that there's just as many good Kickstarter games as there are bad ones, it's just the bad ones get all the attention while the good ones conveniently get forgotten that they were kickstarted in the first place.

I have zero hopes for shenmue 3 being good.

The original was, at the time, the most expensive game ever made. It was just that huge and ambitious. A proper revival of the franchise would needed to be huge to live up to expectations and I just don't see that happening.

I hope I'm wrong though.

According to Wikipedia

Some of Shenmue II was developed in tandem with the first Shenmue, which was most expensive video game ever developed at the time, reported to have cost Sega $70 million; in 2011, Suzuki said the figure was closer to $47 million including marketing.[5] Shenmue II was "completed for a much more reasonable sum".

Shenmue III could easily be great with the money they have.

Seriously, I don't even get how people get surprised by these things.

Has literally nobody on the entire Internet paid attention to a video game development process before? Nearly every single one gets delayed.
