A couple of months ago, cheese05 finally broke the 1:40:00 barrier for 120 stars, something he's been working on for a long time.

Last night, Puncayshun beat cheese's 1:39:5x time with a 1:39:4x or something

Tonight, cheese took BACK the record with 1:39:28

God damn.

Are you serious

I saw cheese's sub 1:40 but I had no idea it's been broken TWICE since then

That's absurd

On the one hand, I get it. Speedrunning is something where every second knocked off is cause for celebration.

On the other hand when you phrase it as something like "Game that is over 20 years old can now be beaten around 30 seconds faster than previously thought" it just seems kinda silly.

So has there been any new tricks/routes that have been discovered since the days of siglemic, or has this all been just optimization?

30 seconds is pretty significant in the world of speedrunning.

ESPECIALLY for a game that's 20 years old.

Without having watched these, if I had to guess, it would have to be a new discovery followed by optimization of it for there to be stuff broken in rapid succession. I just find it hard to believe that it could just be optimization given how this game is constantly being ran.

The same thing leads me to believe it's not optimization :/

nothing has been discovered lately. this is just an insanely difficult game to play optimally and fewer mistakes were made in those last few records. there is still a decent amount of room for improvement, and there has been for a while. it would just be that much more difficult to actually achieve.

the most recent new strats i can think of:
JRB clip to the treasure room - saves half a second
SSL red coin route - saves a couple seconds but that was in the 1:39:57 and maybe even the record before that
HMC BLJ - saves up to 7 seconds, but super difficult and risky. never actually used in a world record.

a bunch of things have been discovered since Siglemic, of course. that was several years ago and his time was over 4 minutes worse. but even then i would say it's mostly just playing better.

Yeah isn't cheese's sum of best segments like sub-1:38 or something? That means there is still nearly two minutes that can be shaved off just by optimizing and without discovering new tricks. They're going to be going at this for a while to come.

This makes me want a speedrunning breakdown by year. I agree "little" updates like these fell less important when it's a few seconds in a 100-minute process (used to be longer!)...but I'm sure between each year, the differences look bigger and we could better appreciate the progress being made.

If the marathon world record was beaten by 30 seconds it would be a pretty big deal, wouldn't it?

It is amazing how many people here are completely ignoring the first statement of 'i get it' when making the second statement which generalizes the thing in a way that if an average person were to see, would wonder wtf these nerds are doing nerding out over someone being really good at a game quicklike. The marathon comparison is a valid one, but I severely doubt most people would equate athletic records to gaming records. "I am the fastest runner in the world" vs "I pressed a bunch of buttons real good".

This is true that most people wouldn't see it that way.

Though it's also sort of a biased comparison (which, unless I'm reading you wrong, is part of the point you're making.)

I mean, you could also say "I'm the fastest speedrunner in the world" vs "I hit the ground with my feet real good"

The bias in comparison was to highlight the point, yes. There is a legitimacy in sports among the general populace that does not yet exist for video games given their relative recency. Maybe thousands of years from now, speedrunning could make it as an olympic sport, but it would be something that would take time, ironically enough.

I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of video gaming/speedrunning becoming an olympic sport, and I'm not sure any of the possible feelings are pleasant.

I don't get your criticism, phrasing it that way seems to highlight the significance of it moreso than just glossing over the facts.
