Gay pride parades started as civil rights marches to promote visibility and show that LGBT people do exist and they wont be forced into the closet.

Nowadays they are less somber and more of a celebration of how far gay people have come. The underlying purpose remains the same though.

The Stonewall Riots?

That was the birth of the gay rights movement. The first gay pride parades took place on the 1 year anniversary of stonewall.

Celebrating skin color or sexuality has always struck me as stupid, although the early gay pride parades had something resembling a function and it beat riots.

Well it does actually bring things into more acceptable territory, even if it shows "hey, my coworker Jim is gay, and he's a good guy" sort of thing.
Like if people are being mistreated for those things, go for it.

This. Gay pride parades promote visibility. Back in the old days, people would claim that almost nobody was homosexual and they didnt need protection/equal rights. Gay pride events show individuals that there are actually a lot of gay people in their community.

Also, being gay can be pretty isolating sometimes (only ~6% of the population). Having an event once a year where you can get together, meet tons of other gay people, and celebrate social progress is a fun/healthy thing.

Yes, but at this point we know homosexuals exist. We live in a post-Will & Grace world.

6% is basically the margin of error in some scientific studies so almost nobody is arguably still apt =p Plus isn't that 6% the estimate for all LBGT, not specifically gays?

So you agree parades are still needed for visibility, right? People still see 6% and think that's barely anyone, until they see tons of people in parades. 1 out of every 17 people is not barely anyone.

And a good portion of that 6% are still in the closet and basically invisible.

I'd be more inclined to say 6% represents people that are out and answer whatever surveys they use to find statistics, and closet cases bring up the number even higher.

It still is, considering that it's not even the full 6%. Plus there's zero point to the parades for exposure because we're used to them. If we didn't celebrate the Fourth of July, for instance, we'd still know America is a country.

So it's an estimate and the real number is likely even less?

No, I said that these parades were stupid. I can see a point in celebrating culture, but sexuality and race aren't a matter of choice (well, within reason anyway; after all, the mayor of NYC married a former Lesbian and the president of a NAACP chapter was secretly a white woman). It's like celebrating being tall or short.

People see fewer than that 6%, which is why visibility is necessary.

The high numbers in the 10-20% are probably estimates for men-who-have-sex-with-men and women-who-have-sex-with-men but do not identify as LGBT. Identifying as LGBT can often just be too big a step for people who has a homosexual experience or two they enjoyed.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4873305/table/table1/

This table shows estimates %'s of Men who have sex with men rather than who identify LGBT. The lowest being the 1.5% (this is just discussing men by the way) while the highest was 5.7%. However, the lowest percents were in places like Wyoming which likely have some degree of under reporting due to the area.

Basically, there are likely more non-heterosexuals than 3% but many just prefer not to identify that way leaving us with that meager percentage.

Except that's literally how it works. The more shares there are, the less value per share. It's why some companies avoid stock splits. Hell, NPR ran a long segment discussing that very phenomenon just the other week back when Google's stock was making headlines for hitting $1k.

Why do people rely on these inflated estimates? Does it make people feel better about themselves knowing that more people think like them? Are we really that insecure as a culture?
