It's one of my all time favorite novels.

Despite all of the horrible shit the protagonist has to contend with (the death of her parents, an emotionally and physically abusive aunt, etc.) she never loses her dignity. She acknowledges that she is neither beautiful or rich, but she doesn't allow that to prevent her from living a good life.

What do you guys think of the book?

I don't know that I've ever read it. I know it was assigned once, but that doesn't mean squat.

It's a very introspective novel about an individual who struggles to find her place in a world that hasn't been very kind to her.

I love it.

She's a fictional character, I know, but I think she's a good role model.

I liked Crash Course's analysis of it on YouTube, the symbolism is interesting, especially with crazy attic lady.

The movie with Michael Fassbender wasn't bad, either.

I prefer contemporary novels too.

It's much more palatable because of the lack of idiosyncrasies.

Still, it's nice revisiting older books sometimes.

I admittedly haven't read Jane Eyre, but I feel it probably doesn't get the respect it deserves because people see it as a girly-girl kind of book.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

It's marketed as a "romance" novel when it is not really one at all. Romance is a component, yes, but I would argue that it's much more about self-discovery and independence.

What are you guys' favorite classics?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Candide
Fahrenheit 451
Nineteen Eighty-Four
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Frankenstein
Hard Times
Animal Farm
A Christmas Carol

And everything Oscar Wilde ever wrote.

Also if genre fiction counts (not that some of the above isn't; actually most of it is...) Tolkien's works and Dune are my absolute favorites. Also The Man in the High Castle.

Classics I didn't really like:
The Sorrows of Young Werther
Dubliners
Casino Royale if it counts
