They are absolutely worthless as monuments. They should be sitting in museums. "Look at another embarrassing moment in our history. We fought a Civil War over the ownnership of people. And then the dumb fucks built monuments to the losing side's leaders and we kept them up for 150 years for some unknown reason."

There is not another historical event we treat like this. We'd run out of space if we had statues honoring every awful moment in human history, lest we forget.

Terrible things frequently influence history. They don't get honored with motherfucking statues, especially not after the fact. Except the Civil War. What makes that so special? Should the Axis Nations have kept up iconography and build statues their former leaders as historical remembrance?

My point is that Confederate monument is a nonsense phrase that shouldn't exist. Build memorials to the poor saps that were duped into dying for X greedy elite cause, but don't honor the people responsible and then defend it.

I think the Confederate monuments are distasteful. However, I don't think vandalism is the best course of action in this case.

The better course of action for the "distasteful" side is to just go ahead and museum or sale everything on public property that can be moved, and make a last stand at Stone Mountain. Anyone wanting that monument removed can instantly be compared to the Taliban.
