Canadian McDonald's got the big indoor redesign with fireplaces and a bunch of shit way before the US. We've had the touch screens here for 2 or 3 years.

We got them in Alberta about 3 months after the NDP got elected 2 years ago. It was their corporate response to the NDP's political promise of a $15 per hour minimum wage.

they were already in the process of being phased in, and were in place before the NDP was elected where I lived.

Minimum wage has nothing to do with it--automation is coming whether wages grow or stagnate. Both cases automation is cheaper.

They've added them to two locations here, along with renovations (some of which were pretty badly needed). But at one of them they don't scan the app coupons properly so there's no point in actually using it.

I live in Korea (where the minimum wage is terrible) and a lot of fast-food places have the screens too. I'm sure the minimum wage thing matters in the speed and thoroughness of implementing the screens but they'd get into a lot of places regardless. I don't enjoy talking to McDonalds employees and being able to take my time and fiddle around with options is a more pleasurable experience.

they will not let you use coupons at the one here :(

The ones here will recognize the coupon but will not allow you to press the button to confirm it. I've tried it on all four kiosks. And then of course nobody in the store actually knows how to work the things and takes you to the human being anyway, like that was precisely the opposite of what I was trying to do here!!!!!

This. Smaller populaton so they can test things here for the usa.

I know some of the healthier options are tested around here. My dad's friend owns two McDonald's locations and I remember there being some comment about "if it wouldn't sell here, nowhere less health conscious would buy it".
