They even named an entire state after a country (Georgia)

What is the deal with all that?

My wife was born in Lebanon, Indiana.

Here in Ohio I live in Lima, and close by we have Cairo and Russia... They are all pronounced differently than the city or country they are named after, though... Lima with an "I" like "lime," Cairo like Care-oh and oddly Russia is Rooshy. Never understood that last one, they others at least make sense based on spelling.

I think Ohio is the king of states with unoriginal town names.

This

We have

Athens
Toledo
Lima
New Albany
New Pennsylvania

To name a few

@The_Top_Crusader

Dude, I live in Kalida in Putnam County. It's less than 20 minutes from Lima. I never expected to see someone that lives this close to me on CE.

Also, the Russia thing never made any sense to me either.

Haha, awesome. Yeah, right down 115 I think. Although I can't say I know it to well, just been through a handful of times. Mainly know it from the radio guys specifying Kalida with a K to differentiate from Elida during school delays and closings when I was a kid... and I think I have a coupon for Dick's Steakhouse somewhere.

I was pretty shocked when there was a topic here years ago about cool abondoned places and someone mentioned the old TB hospital in the middle of the woods here in Lima. Small world, eh?

because the state's name predates the American Revolution by quite a bit

The British colony of Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe on February 12, 1733

On this note, Maine itself doesn't have an original name either. It's named after an historical county of France.

It was New Amsterdam before as well.

Yeah but before the revolution it still made sense to name things after royalty. Even if there was colonial unrest.
