I'm reading Dune right now. I really love the world he crafted, but I wish he would get to the fucking point sometimes. It hinted at what was going on for the entire first section, and only by the second does anything actually happen.

you will have a hard time with the sequels

i would say ASOIAF but skip book 4 in its entirety because the sentence "cersei is dumb" covers it

I honestly don't really plan to read them. Dune is iconic and the world created is super cool, but after 800 pages, I don't see myself really caring what happens. I may be proven wrong, but judging by reviews the sequels were a bit of a cash grab.

Dune became unbearable to read sometime during the 4th book. Books 2 and 3 of Dune were just okay. The first Dune is better than the ASOIAF books but neither series will ever be truly completed. GRRM made his money.

the sequels to dune mattered

but they were dense and not well written, and everything after god emperor was stupid

Yeah, but that one precise moment when all of Cersei's stupidity comes crashing down around her ears and she realizes just how fucked she is sure was sweet payoff.

yeah when they got to the part where she found the guy dangling from the ceiling in the basement and tried to run out of there it almost made it worth reading the brienne chapter that followed

almost. i skipped that chapter entirely.

I didn't care for the Brienne chapters the first time I read them as well. Thought that might have been because I first read AFoC cover-to-cover one night from about 10 pm to 7 am, when I had to stay up all night monitoring a faulty home generator during an extended power outage. Anyway, upon a reread I actually liked the Brienne chapters quite a bit, or at least more than I did the first time. At that point she's basically a vehicle through which GRRM shines a light on some of the neglected areas and people of Westeros, and some of the mental scenery he paints is very nice.

people read books less, also, e-books.

but they are not for everyone I suppose. and amazon delivers physical books still.

she is definitely a vehicle rather than a character whose story has relevant ties to others during that book

but jesus so much of her story is just "and then brienne went to this place, killed a brave companion, and accomplished nothing else. also some talkative nobody died." for 50 pages each time. i am not one for reading 50 pages so two lines on one page can communicate some relevant information about the world
