*movie spoilers*
So i dont know how it ended in the book and if the movie remained faithful, but in that final act, Frodo took the ring for himself. He would have left the mountain with it if not for Gollum sneaking up and literally biting it off his hand and falling into the lava. Good didnt triumph over evil, good got lucky. --- ... He still made the whole journey though, which was extremely risky and selfless.

I mean, even the strongest of men and higher beings would've succumbed to it at some point, and possibly even sooner than Frodo.

That was the point.
The Ring was an object that couldn't be destroyed by willpower, mortal, divine or whatever. Dumb luck(or Eru Iluvatar, whichever way you want to look at it) had to intervene in the form of Gollum for it to happen, plus it goes with the whole spiel of Gandalf's regarding the point of Gollum's survival in Moria, as Frodo recalls right after the Ring's destruction in the book. --- Link meets Fire Emblem in CYOA: Tales of Elibe! The ending of Lord of the Rings is really fucked up when you think about it. In the end the good guys don't win due to courage or intelligence or willpower, but sheer dumb luck (or divine intervention). The only way the heroes actually influence the ending is that Frodo not wanting to see Gollum die is why Gollum is there in the end...but Frodo is proven to have been completely wrong - Gollum couldn't be trusted and leaving him alive was a terrible idea that could have doomed the world. Not to mention, what kind of moral is that? "Be nice to people - that way they'll die for you"
