My friend seems convinced that they cook all of their stuff in the same area and is kind of sketched out about going. Is this true? You would think they would separate fish and shellfish for this reason but I don't know..

No idea. I tried explaining that to him but he told me he was a line cook for a little bit so he knows how restaurants work. It's frustrating talking to him sometimes.

You'd think. Plenty of employees just get complacent and stop giving a shit so the risk is always there.

I have a friend who is allergic to shellfish and he tells em before hand. he hasn't gotten sick yet and basically sticks to fish sushi only (no shrimp or crab obviously)

of course, that sushi place we go to isn't representative of all sushi places. I dunno if I'd take the risk if I had an allergy

Prepare is the word you're looking for. Although a lot of sushi does have "cooked" ingredients

I'm allergic to most fish, but I can eat shellfish. My mom is allergic to most shellfish, but can eat fish. We both eat at Japanese restaurants regularly, without mishap. We're careful about what we order and we ask questions if we're ever unsure about ingredients.
