I think the only reason it worked is because of the massive fucking ships (and great special effects), which cemented the feeling that we were really and truly fucked. they did a good job of building suspense. the actual plot and action was take it or leave it. it was entertaining despite being total schlock the second one, however, didn't appeal to that sense of "oh shit". it wasn't even suspenseful at all.
