Think of the audience. You're purposefully dividing your audience on best girl, and by having the protagonist pick one, you'd just make your audience hate the anime.

It's the same thing in shounen as well. Guy cares more about rolling around in the mud with the male villain than spending a night with the girl throwing herself at him.

Yeah.

The catgirl reveals that her planet allows multiple wives and the two women from Earth are suddenly okay with sharing the MC.

It was silly, but it seemed like something that had to happen eventually in some story.
