One of the reasons it did so well at first was because people were excited about the Ethereum platform for deploying decentralized apps. People were hyped up on the technical side of things because the idea of decentralized apps with 0 downtime is really sexy.

But there are two problems with the platform. Two major problems, and I'm not sure that there are solutions for either of them.

1) It's a very very slow platform. The entire network performs computations extremely slowly despite all of the hardware that is on it. This is by design, because the idea was to prioritize blockchain correctness over performance. This is fine and dandy if all you're doing is using the blockchain as a ledger...but when you're trying to get people to deploy decentralized web-apps on the platform, you're fucked as the blockchain grows bigger. Performance will only ever get worse. No real developers will want to build for an ecosystem that only ever gets slower and slower.

2) Deploying your code means that it lives as part of the blockchain forever. This means that it gets executed each time the blockchain is validated, forever. So eventually the blockchain is going to be a massive pile of steaming antiquated shit that executes code that no one cares about. It's a recipe for disaster.

If you have any money in Ethereum, time to pull out. It's already gone from $200+ to $140+, so no shit. But just saying.

Price has been stable for a while now. Haven't done much research into Litecoin, though.

I did some research into Ethereum because of the hype surrounding the technology...I've been looking at the source code, the white paper, the development environments, etc. My bullshit meter is slowly becoming more and more tingly.

My paranoid side is telling me that it's some hogwash bullshit put together by con artists and babby technologists to make a quick buck via great marketing culminating in a pump-n-dump. But at the same time I can see the promise of a platform that lets you publish decentralized apps. I suppose time will tell.

But the crash from 200+ to 140+ is rather telling.

Sure, it's a correction. But eventually the entire platform will buckle under its own weight. The platform is already piss-poor for performance, so I'm not sure why they thought they could get away with marketing it as some kind of d-app solution.

Not too familiar with how shit works, just the fact that you can make a quick buck by getting in and getting out a week or few later...

Fwiw even Bitcoin has gone down. It's been a shitty last 36 hours for Bitcoin, ethereum and litecoin.

This is probably the only reason most of these coins ever had any value - because people don't really understand what they are and they're just hoping for a quick buck.

It's a meme coin that was never meant to be taken seriously, except perhaps for tipping reddit posts you particularly enjoyed.

Perhaps... and that Bitcoin can make things cheaper bcuz exchange rate if it sits in your wallet for a while, and more hoops to jump through when buying illegal things lol.

Ethereum and lite coin I don't really understand how they work. Heard of ripple too, apparently that has gone up in value quite a bit, but can't remember the exact number. Lite coin has gone up from about $3 a coin to $24 a coin over the last year.... won't make you rich very quick but profit off a measly amount of money nonetheless.

I wouldn't invest in them instead of stocks, of course there's always minor dips, but those big three have been steadily rising in value.

Damn, pretty much all cryptocurrency is collapsing right now. Some coins lost 50% of their value in the last twelve hours.

I feel bad for anyone who "invested" heavily into it with real money. I mine with hardware (because it can also game) but I won't ever spend real money on the coins themselves. That'd be extremely foolish lmao. Some people can make tremendous amounts of money really quickly but it's a gamble.

How is that boring? My portfolio has done super well over the last year and it hasn't gone through anything remotely close to the type of volatility we're seeing in crypto-land.

I mean boring compared to jumping into the bitcoin Ponzi scheme >_>

Haha some of the coins are cool, but it's definitely not an "investment" in the traditional sense. People are just trying to time the pump-n-dump cycle in order to make money quickly.

It will come back, 120-130 is the probable floor right now. Market is correcting in a big way, but it was bound to happen.

Oh please. Ethereum clowns were saying 180 was the floor. Now they're pushing that floor lower and lower the more it crashes lol. The entire market is crashing big time, and it'll get worse eventually.

I enjoy mining, and I'm actually mining Ethereum as I type. But it's for fun. Not for an investment. Ethereum is a scam as far as the d-app platform is concerned, for the reasons I mentioned in my OP.

Funny thing is the same thing happened with bitcoin. Then 6 months later it returned and steadily rose. Now, as a complete guess, maybe ethereum will do the same as people look to jump to another speculation as with bitcoin. So maybe once ethereum starts to slightly go up after a whole week, it may be time to buy in and wait for the next spike. Or, better yet, just diversify the coins you choose.

Or spend money on real investments. Like stocks, bonds, index funds, real estate, businesses, etc.

True, but that's if you plan on working a career with no plans of retiring young. Also, the younger you are the more risks you should take. As you get older, it's harder to recover. A good chunk of CE is early-mid 20's and starting their careers, so they should definitely be getting into long term investments.

Gambling with cryptocurrency is not the same as taking smart risks. You can invest in stocks, bonds, index funds, real estate, etc, and still retire young. Cryptocurrency has an allure because of the potential to get rich quick but it's not a legitimate investment.
