Probably depends on the state. I'm not sure if they have to send material into the state itself or if they have like a correspondence school, but supposedly there's some structure to it. It's not like you can just teach them whatever. After all, it's not a Montessori School.

I was homeschooled for half a year in third grade after moving and not being able to get into a certain school or something. I'm not even sure. My mom taught me some shit from books that I think she bought, but maybe they were provided by the state.

I would finish everything in about two hours and spend the rest of the day on neopets till the rest of the kids would get out of school.

I feel like it's not entirely effective. Is it effective? Gosh. No judgement here.

Depends how attentive you can be with your child.
If you can stay home and give them your full attention while they do their homework, then yes it can be very effective.
Like having a personal trainer, instead of just a gym membership.
But if you don't have that kind of time, because of work, or your own school, etc. Then it'd be less effective than public school cause your kid wouldn't know what they should be doing, or if they're doing something wrong.

For me personally it was 100% not effective and it was incredibly irresponsible of my parents to do it

but it's no big deal now

Depends on the student and the instructor. A lot of kids who get into college at 15 were homeschooled. Conversely, you have a lot of kids who were homeschooled who perform no better than the average high school graduate.

In general, most schools don't spend *that* much time on actual academics (due to lunch, gym, study halls, electives, etc) so it's possibly to finish a day's homeschooling in like 2 hours vs the 6 or so you would in middle or high school. Granted, the extra time could be used on extra academics so you could get 2 or 3 years' worth of schooling done in the same year.
