I was lucky with the various moves I'd had, in that we always had movers. The past few times I packed my own stuff though, because I lost faith in the ability of others to do it correctly. The unpacking is the part I hate, especially because you have to get on with it after packing/moving all the stuff, at least to some degree, so you are able to make food or sleep comfortably.

We're moving quite a long way so hiring a mover wouldn't be cost-effective. Pretty much just stuffing everything we can in the car. We did it once before, it's not too bad.

moving is the worst because when you start unpacking you don't know where to put anything and then you'll look for something you barely ever use and not be able to find it and think you either threw it away on accident or someone stole it

Some of it we've sold already, some of it we're giving away.

That's crazy to me. I hate moving furniture, but the idea of selling/getting rid of it sounds awful. It's expensive and you expect to have it a long life, but it depreciates pretty significantly so you really feel like you're throwing money away if you don't keep it for its lifespan. Are you sure that selling furniture is more cost effective in the long run compared to keeping it and just renting a proper moving truck or hiring movers?

I mean, I guess it depends on what kind of furniture you have, but I have a few pieces that I bought brand new only a couple years ago. Cheap furniture isn't so bad to part with, though admittedly I've had a hard time getting rid of even that. I have a coffee table I got for $10 and a desk I got for $20 that have made four moves with me.

I know but how do you reconcile getting rid of so much furniture? Was it all just thrift store stuff?

It's not like we have tons. A sofa and a loveseat, pretty much. Tables and chairs are easy to replace. You'd be shocked how much it costs to have a professional mover do this, or even to rent a truck and do it yourself.
