On a side note: Every new Final Fantasy game seems to be the worst ever to the so called fans. I'm surprised you didn't post "it's better than XV" or something like that. Although I'm not that surprised as saying anything positive is probably something rare from you as you're clearly projecting how unhappy you are with yourself.

People whine so much about FFXIII's linearity and it is just dumb. I don't really know why a game has to be huge open world. It's kind of overrated. The only open world game that I've found truly worth playing for its world is Breath of the Wild. Elder scrolls is touted for their open worlds but they are filled with tons of uninspired repetitive dungeons. The combat of the elder scrolls series is nothing to write home about and the story is often just not present. Breath of the Wild is probably the first time i've found myself enjoying at the very least combat and the world.

The point is if a game can't be breath of the wild. An open world is just not a necessity. Else we get shit like FFXV where we get this big map filled with 1 town and 20 gas stations while we waste hours of play time traveling from point a to point b by car. We get quests that are just a bunch of no brain objectives and a story that vanishes in the presence of an open world.

FFXIII was great and FXIII-2 was fine barring the dumb pokemon crap.

Lightning Returns though. Is just a hot mess. The game is an aimless waifu lightning fanservice game. The story which seemed to be set up for a rather epic ending kind of falls apart because narrative takes a backseat to the "open world" features the game has that lets you do the game whatever order you choose. The combat also feels really un-intuitive. Even by the end of the game i had no idea why sometimes I would get steamrolled. You can also get screwed on the final boss and be forced to repeat all 13 days over again (with stat roll overs) if you find yourself unable to overcome the final boss with your current equipment.

Lightning Returns is the only one in the trilogy I didn't enjoy, or finish. I ran out of time right at the end, and had to start over. I decided to take a break and come back later, and I've never found the will to go back at all.

I replayed FF13 last year. My opinion is mostly the same.

Combat is simultaneously engaging and boring, and make up 95% of the postgame. It wouldn't so bad if postgame didn't have so much padding in the form of backtracking for missions, and gil being available the normal way instead of it being locked to sellable items with low drop rates.

I enjoyed XIII, even though I didn't get to finish it.

I like Lightning so I've always wanted to play Lightning Returns.

Lightning Returns is what happens when you have an incompetent director (that's unnaturally obsessed with a boring character) make a trilogy revolving around said character because the higher ups at the company know fuck all what to do to stall for time until FFXV drops (like a nuclear bomb, because that game sucked too). With LR, he fully indulged in his shame and made a game that's about (above all else) dressing Lightning up in different outfits and accessories. Story and gameplay has taken a backseat to watching Lightning prance about in a bikini whilst wearing a top hat.

Take the gameplay from X-2 (another "masterpiece" of fanservice drivel from the "talented" Toriyama), strip out the other two party members, and you've got Lightning Returns' combat in a nutshell. Take any RPG ever made and strip out the story, leaving only the most banal sidequests imaginable behind, and you've got its "story."

Combine those with a tiny world, filled with areas you'll be traversing countless times through tedious backtracking, being toured by an emotionless husk of a woman, whose earwaves are being polluted 24/7 by a child that feels compelled to remind you of every possible little thing imaginable, and you've got Lightning Returns.

It's a pathetic excuse of a game that only serves to insult any poor soul that hoped for some semblance of closure from this trilogy that should never have been. A complete waste of time that offers absolutely nothing that the previous entries didn't already offer. You're better off playing almost any other RPG ever made, because - more than anything - the game is boring on level that I previously thought unreachable.

Its a pretty accurate description. I forgot to even address that on top of being randomly difficult the gameplay is abysmally slow its like every sequel to XIII sought to slow the action bars fill rate more and more until you finally got this game where you just spend pretty long periods of time just standing around.

I loved Noel and Serah in XIII-2

He's sadly only around for one of the 4 areas of the game. Then the game just forgets about him.

Every time you win a battle, the camera zooms in on her boobs lol.
Also, I appreciate that now I can just hold down a button to have the computer do all the fighting for me. Occasionally tapping it was a lot of work in the previous games.

It's not a bad game.

IMHO when you play it, don't think about the previous FFs or their gameplay. It's quite enjoyable on its own and I enjoyed equally with the FFXIII 1 and 2.
