In the mid-20th century, the first suburbs were being born in places like Levittown. White Americans were able to move into them and buy a new home for about $8,000 -- about $70,000 in today's money. Very affordable!

However, from 1934 until 1968, the Federal Housing Administration was horrendously racist against African Americans. FHA underwriters warned that "even the presence one or two non-white families could undermine real estate values in suburbs." The federal government refused to underwrite loans for black families in white neighborhoods. And this was going on everywhere, even in the North, in places like Massachusetts and Minnesota.

The same practices were adopted by the banking industry. As a result, African Americans, even G.I.'s who'd fought for their country in segregated ranks, couldn't enjoy a piece of the pie in the post-war boom. This is the reason why so many African Americans today are constrained to the inner city. Today, suburban homes cost, I think, about $270,000 on average. From 70k to 270k -- not so affordable anymore.

As a result, many white families have been able to enjoy the wealth that comes from having equity in a home. That initial wealth was able to grow and mature over the last 60 years... while African Americans were left out. This is the reason why today, the average African American family only has 5% the savings of the average white family.

At the same time, racially integrated neighborhoods in the inner city were bulldozed to build public housing. However, the government's policy was that only black people could live in projects in black neighborhoods and only white people could live in projects in white neighborhoods. This was one of the worst mistakes of the New Deal. Neighborhoods became segregated.

On top of all this, municipalities started zoning black neighborhoods for things like dirty industry, chemical waste treatment, etc. All the wealth and opportunity moved out, and blacks were stuck. Property values nosedived, which meant there wasn't enough money to adequately run the public schools. Without education and good jobs, crime went up. And then the drugs moved in. This is the reason why the average African American only makes 60% as much as the average Caucasian American today.

The whites living on the outside looked in and saw all the problems endemic to black neighborhoods. Which only reinforced the racist notion that there was something self-destructive and inferior about blacks.

In short, all of the problems faced by African Americans were socially-engineered into existence a long time ago, and that's not even talking about slavery, sharecropping, and Jim Crow. Conservative politicians like to denounce efforts to remedy this as "social engineering" and "wealth redistribution," but the truth is the unequal system we have was itself borne out of social engineering and wealth redistribution that went the *other* way. If we want to fix our impoverished communities, reduce crime, and guarantee everyone an equal chance at success, it will probably take some social engineering to do it.

Maybe all these horrible things done by the government is why we should not give so much power and control to the government.

I don't think you know what an anecdote is. Also, an analysis isn't wrong just because the conclusion aligns with fiscal conservative theory.

So, does this mean increasing the "social engineering" or "wealth redistribution" that is already in place?

Affirmative Action has been active for 56 years. So, for example, a black man who is 74 years old today has lived their entire working adult life during affirmative action.

Because you are under the assumption that most white people are not suffering the same economic problems everyone else is. And the assumption that minorities are not the ones at the top of the list when it comes to getting financial help.

But his analogy is about race as a whole, not just individuals. And as a whole, white people are ahead of black people.

There may individuals from either race that fall on either end of the spectrum when it comes to wealth, but that's not the point.

I agree with how you concluded the post, but the fact of the matter is that there's plenty of statistics to show that "just as much" is not valid. Yes, white people aren't immune to problems and it's a fundamental misunderstanding of what is being talked about if you think people are suggesting that is what white privilege is.

Your initial statement or "premise" is based on racial bigotry, where you plainly state that by virtue of being white you were somehow afforded some advantage previously without any actual proof of this occurring. This same "logic" could be used to throw all black people immediately in prison/jail since "they are all criminals.". Just note, it's not my argument or claim, but your very own.
