The cracking sound from joints is caused by a fluid that fills a cavity (which is formed from stretched ligaments). The sound is produced when the cavity collapses. It's an old wives takes that joints cracking is bad for you or a sign of arthritis. In fact, some recent studies have suggested that it can actually be good for you.
