How? Why?

If you admit you're a bandwagoner that's fine, I always wonder how this happens.

You jump on the bandwagon of a team that wins.

Fairweather fans are fans that support the local team only when they win.

I was born in Michigan and every one of the sports teams is legit awful. So I became a San Jose Sharks fan because I like their logo/mascot.
Now I live in Alberta do I'm an Oilers fan. For football it's thr Packers because I like the green/gold color scheme.

What if you like a team that hasn't done anything worthwhile in some time

I don't really watch football, but if there's a game on and the Ravens are playing I still root for them, but I wasn't born in Maryland and no longer live there, anyhow.

From Seattle so for most sports, the Seattle team is my #1. For NBA, I like Cleveland and have liked Cleveland since LeBron joined them and became a Cleveland fan when the Sonics were taken away. Also like Portland cause of Dame. For NHL, I honestly don't care but if I had to choose, it'd be the Canucks cause of location.

honestly I have more respect for people who ditch shitty local teams to be fans of good teams elsewhere

like not the ppl who shift their allegiance every other season but if you were born in Cleveland but arent a Browns fan then I can respect that. But you gotta stick with whatever team you pick even when they are bad.

That's what I'm saying. It depends. He would only be a bandwagoner if he started cheering for them whenever they were popular and successful. If you like a team that has always been successful and popular and you don't switch when they aren't doing so good then you aren't really a bandwagoner.

Maybe they don't have a local team for a sport they like? People around here in St.Louis cheer for all kinds of different NBA teams because we don't have one of our own, and not many people here were around way back in the 1960's when the Atlanta Hawks were still here.

If liking a team that isn't your local team is all it takes to be a bandwagon fan, then like 80% of sports fans in the whole country (the whole world, even) are bandwagon fans because they don't have local teams and have to cheer for a non-local team by default.

04 was 13 years ago and the "21st century" isn't really descriptive when considering last few years.
And the Tigers lately have been looking up, but eh I doubt they'll get anywhere decent.

My favorite player when I was 8 was Roman Cechmanek so I started following the Flyers because of that.

Didn't help that my first introduction to hockey was watching Dan Cloutier get shelled by Minnesota.

When Cechmanek got traded to the Kings I thought about following the Canucks (From Vancouver Island) but then we acquired Niittymaki (I played goalie at the time) so I just stuck with them.

As I result I also started following the Phillies.

Don't like the Eagles though, cheer for the Bills because my Uncle is a huge fan.

All three teams suck usually so I'm definitely not a bandwagoner.

Well, for me this is the reason.

I grew up near Nashville, and for the longest time we didnt have a home NFL team. So I picked a team I liked and went with that. I haven't felt the need to change that to the Titans now, just because they are the closest team to me. If they had been in town before I got into football, maybe I'd have went with them. IDK.

But yeah, that's why for me. I'm sure a lot of people are the same way. Just because you have a local team now doesn't mean you did when you first got into the sport.

Edit: also, I am a Chargers fan so I definitely didn't just jump on a bandwagon.

Family were braves fans, closest place to see them was Philly. Wanted to be different, chose Phillies.

Uncle went to Florida, grandparents gave me Florida stuff since i was born, don't think I've ever not been a fan.

Buccaneers, player that went to Florida went to the Bucs, were in Florida and had orange at the time. Worked for me.

Penguins. Asked my brother a team to be in a nhl video game, he said Pens i said cool.

And been a fan of these teams longer than a lot of y'all have been alive, so, yah.

I was born in TN, and we didn't have any major professional teams until the Oilers came over and rebranded as the Titans. The Predators started up the next year. And the Grizzlies came a few years later.

So I rooted for the Braves cuz they were close, and the Ravens cuz we got their games on broadcast a lot (my dad was a huge Cowboys fan, though). When we finally got the Titans, I became a fan. Otherwise, we watched college sports because UT is huge and nobody in the south gives a fuck about hockey (except for the fans).

I was just curious as to how non-bandwagoner sports fans ended up choosing their favorite non-local team.

Maybe the non-local team has a certain player they really enjoy watching? For example, In addition to growing up with my local Marlins as a kid, I also grew up a huge Seattle Mariners fan because Ken Griffey Jr. was such an incredibly fun player to watch that he became one of my all-time favorites.

Or another reason might be that player that used to be on their local team signed somewhere else and the fan wants to keep following them. I always enjoyed following players that my home teams (AKA the Miami and St. Louis teams) let go to see how they do on their new teams, and some of them (like Miguel Cabrera going to the Tigers, or Albert Pujols to the Angels) made me start rooting for that team as sort of a "secondary" choice behind my home teams.

I've lived in Alaska my whole life, kinda hard to have a local sports team.

I'm a Jazz fan because my grandpa (from Utah) was a big Jazz fan and Carlos Boozer (from my hometown, Juneau) ended up going there. Stuck with them even after I soured on Boozer and he left.

I'm a Cubs fan because they were the one team I could consistently watch as a kid thanks to WGN.

Born just outside of New York City, raised and have pretty much lived my entire life about 15 miles north of boston. Dad(was born and raised in Brooklyn) took me to Red Sox and Celtics games as a kid. Got into football later, and trying to get into Hockey.

I'm going to continue rooting for them, even if (please no) after all the success the Boston teams take a nose dive.

Celtics>Patriots>Sox>Bruins

In terms of importance to me. I enjoy football more, but for whatever reason the Celtics are more important to me than the Pats.

Also, the idea that anyone has ever bandwagoned for the Titans is pretty funny. I have a friend who's a diehard fan and even he admits they suck.
