A flawed man but still I love it when he puts Will in check. The very first episode Will comes in cocky as fuck acting like a know-it-all and at the same time acts like a very immature goon who can't see the bigger picture. He then further disgraces himself by insulting Phil, telling him he's soft and forgot where he came from. Uncle Phil's counter argument fucking destroys Will. Great acting too.

It's funny because watching the show as a kid you only understand him as an unreasonable strict dad with a bad temper. Goes to show the dude is much deeper than what's presented.

Carlton was a mess.
Hilary was just awful.
Will wasn't even his own and was definitely one of a kind.
Ashley.... Ashley was cool, had her rebellious side but was overall a good person.

Poor guy had to deal with 2 wives. Geoffrey making jokes at him. Had to sneak the good food. Dude was a top notch dad and definitely up there on the list of TB dad's.

And most importantly, RIP.

Carlton wasn't a mess. He was just misguided and felt that in order to move forward with the circle he belonged to he had to ignore his roots and where he came from.

Hillary was just spoiled.

Ashley was young and impressionable when Will came to town, so she was able to understand both sides directly and got the best of both worlds.

Well Uncle Phil did have flaws as I said. He did forget where he came from or rather he was embarrassed about it so he doesn't want to claim it(he was a farm boy with a pet pig). Also he was a cheap ass dude, very miserly. He also was very unapologetic and had a bad temper. But still with those traits he was still awesome.

It was actually a really interesting character dynamic....He came from the same streets that Will did. Started out poor, but through hard work built himself up to give his family better...And he was caught in two different circles as well....the one he was currently in. Rich, spend money, take money, live the life....and the one he was raised in...save money, don't always blow it on extravagant things..He knew he COULD do it for his family, and through things like the House, etc, did....But he also tried to raise them the way he was raised.
