I don't think they were ever considered Goombas, at least in the Japanese version. But yeah, they were later retconned internationally into Galoombas, especially once they started appearing alongside regular Goombas in later games.

I don't see anything wrong with the design or the change in style.

They might have been called something different later on, or even in their native Japan, but they were called Goombas when they came to American shores back in the early 90s.

To be fair, I don't think "Goombas" appear in the end credits. Maybe Para-Goombas turn into Galoombas when they lose their wings.

Probably intended to look like Chestnuts from the start but a lack of memory for the original NES game meant that Goombas had to be recolored from Mushrooms (like how clouds were recolored from bushes) and so the appearance stuck.

Nah. They were always meant to resemble shiitake mushrooms. I forget why they're named after chestnuts. I think it was because the person giving them their name thought they looked like chestnuts. Something like that.

Bowser (Koopa) is named after a Korean dish. The Japanese naming system is really weird.
