Using data from the 2012, 2014, and 2016 election cycles, Extreme Maps finds that partisan bias resulting largely from the worst gerrymandering abuses in just a few battleground states provides Republicans a durable advantage of 16-17 seats in the current Congress, representing a significant portion of the 24 seats Democrats would need to gain control of the House in 2020. These "extreme maps" were all drawn in states under single-party control; the report finds that conversely, maps drawn by independent commissions, courts, or split-party state governments had significantly less partisan bias in their maps.

it surprises me that the number isn't higher

in 2012 more people voted for dem house reps than republican house reps, but the massive republican lead was retained

This wouldn't even be an issue if democrats weren't a complete joke at the state level. Win state elections, you draw the districts.

control of state government should not allow a party to disenfranchise their state's voters on the national level

sadly gerrymandering is a practice that is generally not punished nearly enough by voters

Well, the neat thing about it is that it works to limit voters' ability to punish the gerrymanderers.

This is why republicans win, once they win at the state level they can manipulate it to win at the national level. If dems where half as concerned with state elections as they are with federal they could undo this sort of thing.

Also those are gerrymandered too.

But, we've seen several cases over the past few years where GOP drawn districts have been deemed illegal by federal courts. So there's the alternative fix of "stop breaking the law, assholes."

Exactly. Gerrymandering has been going on for years and years and years and years. Wikipedia shows evidence of it as far back as the early 1800's.

I don't know why the public outcry over this now when it has happened countless times before where the other party got to draw the lines.

Spoils of war.

does it? gerrymandering is done by state senators and state house reps

i was not under the impression they could redraw their own lines too

And because they control the house, the senate and the seat, they'll get even stronger under Trump, expect mid terms to be completely in their favor in 2018, Especially because all the Dem seats are in the red. They'll be playing defense more than trying to grab up extra republican seats. It's amazing. As it stands, it's possible we'll be having a Republican controlled government on both national and federal level for the next few decades.

This I can't agree with; even this study suggests they'd still have a majority in the House (and how do you explain their success in the un-gerrymandered Senate?)

"Partisan gerrymandering, which refers to redistricting that favors one political party, has a long tradition in the United States that precedes the 1789 election of the First U.S. Congress. In 1788, Patrick Henry and his Anti-Federalist allies were in control of the Virginia House of Delegates. They drew the boundaries of Virginia's 5th congressional district in an unsuccessful attempt to keep James Madison out of the U.S. House of Representatives."
