alright let's do this - thoughts and predictions on the top 35

first:
- i'm following the show casually, and don't claim any special insight
- everyone's a scandal away from having their chances shot anyway

results are more volatile this season, mostly due to greater votals. i don't have a total handy, but kim jonghyun is 1st place with 2,795,491 votes compared to 1,473,685 for sejeong at this point last season, the top 20 all have more than 1 million votes compared to the top 4 last time, 58th place this time has the amount of votes as 31st place last time, etc. last time it was predictable that the jellyfish trainees split a fanbase and who would drop at 1 pick, but there are enough votes this time for everyone near the top to have strong individual fanbases. right now there around 7 trainees that look pretty stable and most people would predict to make the group, but a lot can change now that we're heading into 2 picks.

2 picks is not going to be as dramatic a shift as 1 pick, but it'd be interesting to see who benefits from it the most. some people are putting a lot of weight on those with a ship/pairing, but i'm not sure there's enough of a consensus on those outside of the most obvious (OngNiel, WinkDeep, maybe Byeongari), but those are obvious because they already share a fanbase anyway. of course, assuming we go down to 1 vote for the top 22, this is just going to make the end result more unpredictable.

35. Kim Donghan

it occurs to me that being last place is a pretty good spot to be for a low ranked trainee, because for that episode, your ranking is a bigger deal than 1st place. 35th is what the episode ends on, and the image of donghan giving his speech while his lip quivers is going to stay with voters. he's also a top 2 visual with his new hair imo, and since this is mostly a visual game i expect him to rise a lot. ofc, given some of the visuals at the top i'm not completely in line with the voting demographic, but i've seen praise for his visuals so there's hope. his rank didn't change much between his performance on ep. 6 and ep. 8, but that's fine since he didn't get any screen time, and not everyone's going to watch all the individual cams. actually that's another factor - screen time distribution has been so atrocious that we barely know anything about donghan so a lot of people might only start noticing him now.

BOLD prediction, he's going to lee suhyun this shit. he'll be 22nd place next time, but then go one further and make the top 11. the slight wrinkle is that someone from his company said that his group's debut was in the works, so some think he's going to end up like eunbin when she was put into CLC, but idk i think this is different. i think everyone assumes that companies are always planning debuts, so hearing it doesn't mean much without anything more concrete like with eunbin.

34. Kwon Hyunbin

he had a very negative edit early on, which actually didn't affect him as much as i thought it did. still, he's been dropping gradually the whole time, so it's still suprising he managed to cling on. even being the villified member of the justice league counts for something, and it helps that the rest of that team still seems to like him, and jokes about his lack of skills/laziness all the time. he still gets a lot of screen time, and has been gradually redeeming himself by working hard and improving steadily. it's a tough one, because he's been a major character this whole time and he's on a strong redemption arc that will almost definetly be the focus during his team's segment, but i think there's also a fair amount of people who have written him off even if they don't hate him anymore. he might survive under the 2 pick system, especially from those invested in keeping the justice league alive. fuck it, i'll say he makes top 22.

33. Kim Yehyun

first of all, YESSSS. hidden teacher, literal angel, music prodigy kim yehyun made it. sadly, this is probably as far as he goes. there's so little hype, he doesn't even have a subway ad.

i love his selflessness, and genuine excitement when other people do well. 'if it's you' was the best position evaluation stage, and i like everyone on that team but yehyun arranging the song, and helping give yongguk the confidence to reveal his potential was a big part of it. position evaluation is probably going to be his best showing because he can show off his technical music knowledge, and that's not going to come up for the concept evaluation even if all his potential screen time wasn't already going to be swallowed up by hyunbin's redemption arc.

his voting trend is funny. he shot up from 93 to 34 when screencaps were passed around of him helping everyone in F class learn the dance to the point of injury, but got no screen time for it. then he dropped to 55 after the first eliminations, as if people were satisfied with him being rewarded for his efforts but not that invested. then the reason they voted for him made it on screen, and he went up to 33. under 2 pick, he doesn't have the fanbase.



and man, why did i start doing this so late/at all. more later, after the next episode throws all my predictions out the window. also, i'm doing this as a go along, so if i end up putting more than 11 people in the top 11, i'll deal with it later.
