At this point in the American workplace, you're expected to come in to work when you're sick. "Sick days" have all but been eliminated, and you're only supposed to call in if you're on your death bed.

So everyone comes in while they're sick, sneezing and coughing all over the place, and it infects the entire office.

I'm going through it now and it really sucks. I'm sick because my boss was sick and now everyone else around me is sick. If we didn't have this culture where we're expected to come in sick, it wouldn't need to be passed around to everyone like this.

Don't know what that means.

At my last job, they completely eliminated sick days as their own thing. They combined it with personal days, deaths in the family, what have you. So what does that do? It encourages no sick days!

At my current job, we don't have a set number of sick days. They tell us to just take them as needed, and they've never had a problem with it before. Which means what? That it's not encouraged, and if you take too many days, they talk to you about you becoming a problem.

My boss is the opposite. You don't come in sick. He'll keep his distance and throw shit at you if you show up sick until you leave.

There are many heavy tools in our shop you don't want thrown at you too, and they will be used as projectile weapons.

Not where I work.

They encourage people to take sick days no questions asked.

If you come to work sick pretty much everyone is like "go home and get better"

Also most people can VPN and remote work, handle emails, paperwork, etc...

My office strongly encourages people not to come in if they are sick. You also don't use any sort of personal days. As long as you don't abuse it no one has an issue.

The bigger problem is that we've become so dang afraid of germs and discomfort that we've castrated our immune systems. If somebody comes in to work with a cough, suddenly the whole office has a cough because their pitiful immune systems can't handle.something so simple.

Wash your hands after pooping or peeing, or when you have visible contaminants such as dirt or dust on them. Don't you dare wash your hands before eating when you haven't even been getting dirty. Are you trying to kill your future self?

Yeah, got no sick days as well, only personal days, and the new stupid system has it so that if we are sick, we have to retroactively request for time off in a really weird ass way.

I see they have you firmly in their grasp. Be happy that you have to work at home, yes! Also put in some hours Saturday and Sunday, it's fine because you're at home! It's delightful, yes!

I have had real jobs and have gone through this. It's one thing that's nice about my current job because we're way "behind" in that realm. I have no remote access at all, not even to my emails. That's a great thing.

I actually got written up at a previous job for wearing one of those around when I got sick. As the manager of a foodservice establishment in a popular tourist destination, I preferred not to get my own workers sick, and especially not guests. Higher ups came to visit and asked why I had the mask on, proceeded to write me up because "we'd rather you actually get people sick than have people perceive that there are sick people here."

I mean, I think people would rather see me with the mask on than hear me with almost no voice left as I try to talk to them.

Oh yes, and calling out sick, while not "against the rules" per se, can still be used against you later should higher ups/HR decide to try and justify further write-ups/termination.

Hm, I dunno if I would really prefer that myself but having never experienced it I guess I can't say.

But what I was thinking of was personal only being preferable to sick only, which I would have to say it is.

this. having a cold lasts like 5-10 days for me. Do I stay home all the time? Pretty sure you're contagious throughout too. What if I get it twice a year? that's like 2 weeks vacation to either absorb in my vacation days or take on top of them. Both are unacceptable.

Plus everytime I got sick within the last years was when I went out and got shitfaced, coincidentally. Not worth making people skip 1 week of work only for everyone to get sick from commuting anyway
