She's been working there for 40 years. Not too long before I was hired, they had celebrated her 40 years of service to Walgreen's. 2 weeks later, they push her into retiring (because they didn't feel like paying her that much money). Then they bring her back in January, but they're only paying her half of what they did before for the same exact work.

I dont think you quite understand how being pushed into retirement goes. She worked there for 40 YEARS. 40. YEARS. And thats how they treat her?

This isnt a teenager losing his job. This is someone who spent half their life or more working at your store.

She spent 40 years at a Wal-Greens noncorporate location. I mean isn't there a mutual loyalty there? They paid her for 40 years...

It's dirty because they loopholed their way around paying a 40+ year employee table scraps.

I agree though, if they pulled that shit with me, I wouldn't even think about coming back, but for some people, when you work 40 years with a company, it's basically all you know.

Loyalty is standing by your dedicated employees. Not only keeping them around until you no longer feel like paying them what they're worth, even though your stores are making millions, if not, billions per year.

Agreed, but there are enough greedy hucksters out here that people need to be on the look out for their own best interests. Especially when it comes to a massive corporation like this and not like a family business (though the same can happen there too).

This guy must be like 16, because he has no idea how this type of shit works.

A person who has worked for a company for 40 years, knows more about the company than ANYBODY else there, even more than many of the managers do. On top of that, they have the type of experience that a high schooler or recent college grad won't have.

It's not just about "hurr durr she rung up cashiers for 40 years". Even if she's not in management, she'd be one of the people you turn to when it comes to daily store operations when nobody else knows what the hell to do.

Yeah places do this all the time even though it's technically illegal. After someone has been there for that long they're usually way overpaid for the position

I used to work at a supermarket and one of the bakery guys had been there for like 20+ years. He made $28 per hour just putting frozen cookies in the oven all day. You could train a 10 year old to do that

So wait, wait.

Let me get this straight.

It's Wal-greens fault for paying her too much for so long
It's Wal-greens fault for forcing out to retire
It's Wal-greens fault for offering her back a job and rehiring her

Is that correct? So basically they paid her too much, but didn't pay her enough for retirement?

This is all also assuming that they're going to keep somebody in the same exact position for 40 years.

Hell, even after a year or so, the company starts expecting more of you and asks you to do more. I've had coworkers there that were gradually moved up the ladder (with pay raises) and then were kicked back down to the status of regular cashiers in favor of some new blood that didn't know their respective department nearly as well and didn't even end up staying with the job that long. By then, the veterans end up leaving, and you're stuck trying to find somebody that can do their job as efficiently as the veteran.

And if you've never worked a certain position at a particular company, then it'd be best if you didn't make claims about what that position entails and make snap judgments about their value.

it costs more money overall to keep training new employees if people quit all the time. it's usually better for the place to retain employees. But only until a certain point.

They didn't think she was worth it, even though they kept her around for 40 years when they apparently could have gotten somebody fresh to fill her role this whole time? That's not making much sense and it's especially not making sense when you consider they asked for her to come back for half a paycheck, when it would have been easier to get and train somebody new for the position, who wouldn't feel bitter and entitled to more pay, if the position is apparently so easy that anybody can do it.
