Well?

I mean, do you think that someone could sincerely believe themselves to be of a different "race" than their outward appearance would suggest, and that the only thing that would help them would be for them to change their skin color and other features as much as feasible?

I suppose it could happen, but it would seem to be a very specific disconnect between a person's brain and the rest of their body, since what we refer to as different "races" of people really aren't that different genetically (or so I've read). In contrast, there are a number of genetic and hormonal differences between men and women, and there are intersex people, so I can see there being an "intersex" person who outwardly looks like one sex but internally has hormones and brain structure more like the opposite sex. And if somebody is "intersex" in that way, it makes sense that only hormones and/or surgery could help them (though of course different trans people need different treatments).

(I know I made a topic about this a few days ago, but I let it die before I said much in it, and it was also about a specific article rather than the general question.)

Yeah, it's definitely possible.

There was a ParanoidObsessive post in a topic earlier that I agreed with on this subject.

Unfortunately, it's been since-deleted, but yeah.

The feeling of a race stems from its culture, which is man made. Just because you may like somebody else's more than your own doesn't mean you're a white person trapped in a black body (or whatever). That's just stupid.

Actually, the complete abandonment of any objective classification system as it relates to personal identity is the next logical step.

I identify as a cupcake.

As a trans woman, trans race is not real. With sexes, development abnormalities may result, but with skin color, there's nothing.

Fucking bigot, how dare you deny her experiences. It's really fucking bigoted of you to refuse to recognize what she identifies as.

Yes, I'm thinking that if somebody wants me to treat them as something they don't appear to be, there has to be something physical that makes it ambiguous to me what they actually are. I can assume that most transgendered people have brain structure and/or hormones that it make it not clear what sex they "really" are, but if somebody has "white" skin and no African ancestors, I don't know why I should believe that they think they're black as opposed to just identifying with black people.

Actually, I might accept someone as being something they literally aren't if they've spent long enough living full-time as that other thing. So if a non-white person continuously presents as white, self-identifies as white, and is treated by everyone else as white, I might consider the person white if this goes on for long enough, since for day-to-day interactions the person may as well be. (I won't say anything about people "transitioning" to races other than my own.)

I saw this criterion in the article supporting transracialism that caused so many SJW-type people to flip out; it's in the paragraph starting "I do not think so."

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/hypa.12327/full

As she says at around that point, this criterion might allow somebody to change their gender or race, but it probably wouldn't allow somebody to become a cupcake, since it's hard to see how somebody could convincingly present as a cupcake to other people.

Maybe trans-cultural? But trans-race doesn't make any sense. Lifestyles between different cultures are different enough that I can see someone wanting to change.

It's like gender vs sex - one is determined by how you are raised (Not saying that your parents made you transgender, saying that the way a gender behaves is due to the environment), the other is determined by your genetics.
