Why say "2K18" when 2018 is the same amount of characters?

I guess the franchise just lasted longer than they were expecting.

It's because of the publisher, but 2KXX is more marketable and memorable than 20XX. People say they're playing the new 2K game, if it wasn't marketed that way they'd say they were playing the new basketball game sans any branding.
