There really is no other right answer than 8.

7 was their high point in history and 8 is their low point. I mean, they were really scraping the bottle of the barrel for ideas at that point. Garbage plot twist and hollow characters, which became the norm for the entire company shortly thereafter.

13 was the first one I actively disliked.

Well, 2 was, but that's a hiccup since I liked all the ones after it. Had a middling opinion on eight and thought the characters were kind of weak in 12, but 13 was the first one where I didn't like any aspect at all.

And yeah, I'd say this. I didn't think 8 was garbage but it was meh to me. 2 I didn't enjoy so I never finished it and 13 I just actively disliked. 14 was also trash but it got a reboot and is apparently quite good now so I'll give it a pass. Haven't played 15 yet, though I intend to eventually.

I think X-2 is where things began to change for the worst. I liked playing that game, but it's more of a glitzy gaiden game than a sequel and it misses the sort of mood that Spira previously built up. It's a game of reused assets and uninspired, copy-pasted add-on dungeons, and the music ranges from listenable to forgettable and pretty much always misses the mark that X set. Even as a different, more peppy style, it feels a bit forced and generic.

I mean nothing could trump FF9, in a way that's the last great FF game. It was the last game by the series creator, it was the culmination of the Playstation trilogy and it was the last game with an expansive, no-holds-barred script - ever since, the games have had to work within the confines of voice acting, an that has crippled what the games can get away with.
