UnfairRepresent 05/04/17 6:33:31 PM #1:	The number of children in Japan fell for the 36th straight year to another record low, the latest data showed Thursday, indicating efforts by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government have been inadequate to tackle the long-standing issue of a declining birthrate. The number of children aged 14 or under, including foreigners, was down 170,000 from a year earlier to 15.71 million as of April 1, the lowest level since comparative data became available in 1950, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said. Abe, who took office in December 2012, has pledged to address the nation's low birthrate by implementing measures to promote the active engagement of women in society and bolster support for child-rearing. The ratio of children through age 14 to the overall population also slipped, falling to a record-low 12.4%, down for the 43rd straight year. By gender, there were 8.05 million boys and 7.67 million girls. Among 31 countries with a population of 40 million or more, Japan ranked lowest in terms of the ratio of children to the overall population, lower than Germany's 13.2%, the United Nations Demographic Yearbook showed. By age, children in Japan aged 12 to 14 comprised the largest group at 3.35 million, while the youngest group covering newborns to two-year-olds was the smallest at 2.94 million, the ministry said. According to prefectural data as of last Oct. 1, only Tokyo had more children than a year earlier among Japan's 47 prefectures. In 1954, the number of children in Japan reached 29.89 million, and the figure then gradually declined. The number briefly picked up in the 1970s due to a second baby boom, but the downward trend resumed in 1982. In 1997, the proportion of those aged 65 or older surpassed that of children aged 14 or younger for the first time. Abe has been aiming to increase Japan's total fertility rate -- the average number of children born to a woman -- to 1.8 by the end of fiscal 2025 from 1.45 in 2015. Unless the current (Record low) crop of children grow up to be sex fiends. Japan is in trouble. Don't mistake Tokyo for the whole country. People in Tokyo are banging constantly.
