Slightly misleading. Some articles are getting the grasp of things better than others. What's happening here is that HBO has signed deals for four separate writer teams to build possible shows. It doesn't mean all four will go forward. Chances are, we'll see two of the stronger pitches, IMO.

Robert's Rebellion is not really something I'd be ecstatic to see, anyway. The Long Night or maybe The Dance of Dragons -- that sounds better. Dunk & Egg for an 8-episode one-piece. In fact, many of these would only work well as limited series, I think.

I'd prefer a post-finale piece, though.

I'm not well-versed in ASOIAF lore. What are Dunk and Egg, Dance of Dragons, and Long Night?

Dunk & Egg is an ongoing novella series set several decades prior to the books/show. There are some notable characters involved. Maester Aemon being a big one. The Dance of Dragons was a big Targaryan civil war event beautifully and brilliantly covered in an extended-length visual retelling on the Season 5 Blu Ray/DVDs. There's a lot of material. The Long Night is the "long, long ago" War for the Dawn. It's where the tales of grumpkins and snarks come from. It's the original war against the Others/White Walkers. The Wall goes up, the realm is submerged in darkness. Yadda yadda.

I'm not normally a fan of prequels (the only normal ones I can think of that I like are FE7 and MGS3), but if you have to make them, then really distant ones are the best option.

MGS3 is such a good prequel. It's nuts how good it is. It feels like it originally had no business being that good, but then Kojima, Fukushima, and Murata all got high on some battery-charging mushrooms in the middle of a forest and wrote 2004's definitive epic.

MGS3 works because it tells a story that you can't already infer from the 'later' games. All you know about Big Boss before MGS3 is that he's a big warmongering douchebag with one eye, so a complex backstory for him that casts all of his actions in a different light changes everything.

But we already know everything we need to know about Robert's Rebellion and we know who has to live and who has to die, so we don't even get to pretend that we're worried that Jon Snow might die in the middle of the season to a guy who grew up in Gin Alley.

Exactly why I wouldn't be over-the-moon about a Robert's Rebellion adaptation. Would I watch it? Absolutely. Game of Thrones did what no other show has done for me -- it's replaced Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as my favorite TV show. I love GoT and I'll give anything set in the ASOIAF a shot. It'd have to be bad to make me stop watching, and I don't foresee a Robert's Rebellion thing being "bad." I just don't expect it to be particularly exciting, either.

If one of the writing teams goes that route, and I agree it's likely, the best news attached that announcement would be an official statement that the show would go on for three years, max.

Anthology show. Each season explores something new. Two-year intervals between seasons, so as to allow thorough creative development between stories.

You want your Robert's Rebellion? Good. Here it is. Season 1. You want The Dance of Dragons? Here it is, Season 2. You want your post-Thrones spinoff featuring Arya Stark exploring Sothros? You've fucking got it. We just called Maisie.

If one of these ideas sticks way more than the others, guess what? In 2030, you can go back and expand it into an eight-season run. If you're feeling frisky.

In the meantime? I think this could work.
