From Gizmodo

A YouTuber going by the name RossCreations is one of those loathsome channel operators that doesn’t really understand what a prank is. Recently, he removed some stop signs that he deemed “unnecessary” and now, he’s been arrested. In a video published to his channel today, Ross is pleading with his half a million subscribers to donate to his legal fund.

Here’s how Ross describes his channel:

"Combining comedy, courage, and creativity: Ross can’t help but push the limits as he struggles to find his place in society. You’re free to live vicariously through him as he disguises his stupidity as “entertainment, pranks, and stunts.”"

It appears that he realizes what he does isn’t really about pulling off pranks, it’s about doing stupid things. The stupid thing that landed him in jail was dressing up as a road worker and removing two neighborhood stop signs. In the video, he and his friends laugh as cars go through the intersection without stopping. And... that’s it. For whatever reason, someone determined that the intersection needed a stop sign for safety reasons; he decided that it didn’t and the prank is over.

It doesn’t seem that anyone was hurt, but Ross claims in the video that he’s charged with third-degree felony grand theft and faces up to five years in prison. He wants his fans to chip in and help get him out of this trouble. Not only is this just stupid, it might be a violation of YouTube’s community guidelines. “Harmful or dangerous content” is prohibited and this could certainly be construed as promoting dangerous behavior.

Ross is one example of a trend that’s been building in YouTube land. Many people have started to think that cruelty and stupidity constitute a prank. Sam Pepper is one example, he “pranked” a friend by kidnapping him and pretending to murder one of their mutual acquaintances. Most recently, a couple lost custody of their kids after posting a series of “pranks” in which they repeatedly abused their children.

He got lucky. If there would have a fatal accident at one of those intersections after he removed the sign, he'd probably be facing manslaughter charges.

There must be some other endangerment sort of charges they can throw on top of that weak ass theft charge. While nobody was hurt his actions could have easily lead to people being injured or even killed.

Reminds me of that one episode of parks and recreation where Ben tries to prank the team and ends up going completely overboard.

I love how there are a subset of people out there who think "prank" is defined as "being allowed to do whatever I want, then suggest that no negative consequences result because of a nebulous appeal to humour".

I don't even understand what's so entertaining about doing dumb pranks on other people and especially on total strangers.
And for some reason these prank vids usually get millions of views as well.
What is this fucked up world we live in?

Dude created video evidence of his crime, posted that to his YouTube channel, and probably intends to use the "It's just a prank, bro" defense.

God, I hope his fans don't chip in money, because they'd be wasting the hell out of it.

The awful grammar is a solemn reminder that Gizmodo refuses to hire actual journalists >_> One basic grammatical error being that the editor went with "that" rather than "who" when referring to a person.

See, this could be grounds for a libel suit. The parents haven't actually been found to have abused the children, that's a legal determination which needs to be made in a court of law. An emergency protective order isn't actually a finding of abuse. Again, if there was anything resembling an editorial standard at Gizmodo, you wouldn't see shit like this.
