I don't know about the doctor vs psychiatrist thing, but yes, it is possible to be depressed but not have suicidal thoughts. I say be honest. I did tell my psychiatrist that I wanted to kill myself and I was almost sent to the hospital against my will before I begged her not to, so it's..possible...?
