This topic occured to because of a friend I hang out with. He seems like a mostly normal guy from what I observe, but he's always insulting himself every chance he gets, claims that no one takes him seriously, including friends and family and says things like he's sad all the time. The weird thing is he say this stuff in a jokey way though usually. So it's really hard to read him.

What really raised my eyebrow was this tattoo he got about a week ago. It was some generic Chinese character. Today, I asked him what does it mean. He says that it means "You will never be happy" or something like that. He goes on to say that he got it to remind himself that he's nothing.
I'm not sure if that's true or not if that's what it actually means, but this raised a red flag to me. I told him that he shouldn't be talking about himself like this, otherwise, he might start believing this stuff. He said, "Start?," then said that he says this stuff to himself as a coping mechanism. And again, he said it in his usual, innocent, joking way.

I'm not sure if he's serious or not and I'm starting to get very worried about him.

In moderation yes.

The level he is at with this sounds dangerously high. Encourage him to get help.

Honestly you might wanna give up on being nice about it and start talking to his family, intervention, whatever.

If he jokes like this on average, what about when shit really hits the fan?

This could be his life, man. Trust me, you don't ever want to lose a friend to suicide or addiction, an that's the path this sound like it'll lead to.

That's part of the weirdness. I've never actually seen him get super mad or anything. There are times where he'll be upset or irritated over something that would usually make someone feel such a way. But other than that, he's a pretty chill dude.

As far as I know, he doesn't smoke or drink (and kind of prides himself on it). He and I always talk about how we don't need to do that stuff to have a fun time because most of our other friends tend to do at least one or the other or both.
And he talks about his huge irrational fear of death that he have, despite making suicide jokes and quickly retracting from them by claiming he would never do that in the first place due to his fear of dying.

He's just self-deprecating nothing really wrong with that imo.

Some people just don't really care about personal happiness so much, seems like a cool guy tbh.

Hopefully he's not really depressed though and masking it.

There's humility/self-deprecation and then there's being an endless source of negativity. The tattoo is just cringe

yeah you're right branding yourself as basically 'will never be happy' is a bit much...

In fact, he kind of reminds me of CE in the sense that he's never had a girlfriend, so he jokingly says things like, he's accepted that he'll die alone or how he tends to swat away compliments on his look and substitute it with an insult.

It's really depressing stuff when you get past the tone in which he says these things and think about it. He's been kind of like this since high school, but now, it's just more prominent. If he's actually this sad, I would feel pretty crappy as a friend that I didn't pick up on it earlier and help out somehow a lot sooner
