Putting yourself down as a coping mechanism: Is it healthy?

Kitt 05/01/17 5:41:34 PM #1:	This topic occured to because of a friend I hang out with. He seems like a mostly normal guy from what I observe, but he's always insulting himself every chance he gets, claims that no one takes him seriously, including friends and family and says things like he's sad all the time. The weird thing is he say this stuff in a jokey way though usually. So it's really hard to read him. What really raised my eyebrow was this tattoo he got about a week ago. It was some generic Chinese character. Today, I asked him what does it mean. He says that it means "You will never be happy" or something like that. He goes on to say that he got it to remind himself that he's nothing. I'm not sure if that's true or not if that's what it actually means, but this raised a red flag to me. I told him that he shouldn't be talking about himself like this, otherwise, he might start believing this stuff. He said, "Start?," then said that he says this stuff to himself as a coping mechanism. And again, he said it in his usual, innocent, joking way. This could be his life, man. I've never actually seen him get super mad or anything. There are times where he'll be upset or irritated over something that would usually make someone feel such a way. But other than that, he's a pretty chill dude. As far as I know, he doesn't smoke or drink (and kind of prides himself on it). He and I always talk about how we don't need to do that stuff to have a fun time because most of our other friends tend to do at least one or the other or both. It's really depressing stuff when you get past the tone in which he says these things and think about it. He's been kind of like this since high school, but now, it's just more prominent.
